As a trainee am I obligated to report to the legal exec as though he is my boss? Currently in a mid-sized firm doing liti and there's a legal exec in our team who acts like he's my boss. Gives me tight deadlines to finish submissions and spam calls me to make changes immediately without personal boundaries. The associate who assigns me work doesn't even do this. Do I actually have to listen to what the legal exec says?

I would say it depends on how senior the LE and how favoured they are by your real boss. ie. the one who pays and hires you. It’s sad but many people are looking for someone to pick on / assert control over, and usually it’s the next one lower in the pecking order. If this LE does this to every trainee, it could be their way of sussing out who can handle toughness. If this LE is also new, perhaps at an appropriate moment have a chat with the associate. Do so with caution… observe the relationship between the LE and the bosses first.
By the way this is non legally qualified LE and not that are on their way to becoming associate pending passing of exam right?
