Default Economics Grad and Government Careers

Hi, thank you so much for clicking this thread! This is a thread asking for your insight I am wondering what doors might be open for a person like myself.

Male, with NS.
Degree: NTU Economics, 2nd Upper Honours expected
Internship: 1 with GLC in a business/economics related role.
Others: Reasonable CCA/Leadership experience, not sure if this matters.

Ideally, I would like work in a job where my interests, ethical principles and need for job stability are aligned. As of now, I think a job in government would be a good fit.

Assuming that I graduate with a 2nd Upper, what opportunities in government should I be aiming for? What ministries/stat boards would be ideal in my position?

Academically, I am interested in macroeconomics, economic growth and political economics. Are placements in organizations that are aligned with these interests such as MAS, MOF and MTI's Economist Service within reach?

Thank you so much for reading this.

I would suggest applying to the Bank of England. The salaries are not competitive, but you have a healthy work life balance and working hours are fine. And when I say Work-Life balance then it really means it (not like in private firms where they apparently do not know what Work-life balance means).

Plus, private medical insurance and 25 days off.

Hi! Thanks for replying!

I did not expect this answer. Are you from the UK? Placements at the BoE are open for Singaporeans? I know that some Phd Economists at the BoE are asian (assumably non-UK citizen), but is the graduate program open to international applications?

Don't bother about the joker, I don't know why he keeps asking questions about London in a sg forum.

As for BOE, forget about it. There is no way they are going to hire a normal degree Singaporean for some generic office job.

Okay. I did not know you're from Singapore. If you are not a citizen from the EU then it is hard to get a job there, but I would at least try it, you have nothing to loose. I did not apply for the graduate positions, only for the experienced positions.

I did not work there, but I had once an interview with them and i have read some good critics about them. I will try in the near future to get a job there.

Nevertheless, i wish you best of luck for your applications!

Singapore is a great city, you should stay there

You say until like that might as well ask ts to apply all the jobs in the world since there is "nothing to loose" (except lots of time). Why stop at BOE? Go for BOJ, Fed, PBOC, RBA and maybe even Negara!

As they say, econ grads tend to be math-robots with no souls. I do hope I still have a soul.
