Thank you, it is very encouraging!

For rank & file staff there is very little autonomy and no strategic work to do over there. Mostly just fill in templates, run standard reports and ensure compliance to policies set by head office.

Nice place to take it easy with job security, but don't go in thinking you are going to do those things they say in the job ad.
Thank you so much for the info. Any idea how many credit paper I am expected to produce every month? Anyone knows how to do a background check for politically exposed people? Do I need to know Loss given default and probability of default concept?

I’m afraid I cant help you on these very job specific questions, as mentioned earlier I am not from the credit department though sometimes I do work with the people there.

Generally I would say don’t need to worry that much. A place like MUFG (or Jap banks in general) is a very regimental follow precise instructions place. Every step is detailed to you and you just have to follow, got good & bad. Good is honestly almost no learning curve just follow instructions even a newbie cant go wrong after 3 mths, bad is you become like administrator and learn very little.

Over here I would say generally you need to be at FVP level to make managerial / business decisions that really have some impact. I think you are joining as manager? so no worries, likely the job even a fresh grad can do. For me I am now at a grade similar to senior manager and honestly not much brain work involve, follow instructions and go through motion can already.

kelly - just curious why you want to join mufg.

I am guessing you are still young & with maybe 2-3 years work exp only. imo it is too early to join a jap bank at this stage unless you already decide to stop pursuing career advancement and just want to cruise till retirement. jap banks promotion and pay advance is very slow esp for those who start at the bottom. most of their non-japanese middle to senior management are mid career hires from big foreign banks, it takes forever for a local to climb from bottom up.

if work life balance is what you want there are many industries out there that can offer better with decent working hours compared to a jap bank.

Sorry for being direct & no offence to TS, but my gut feel (TS feel free to correct me if wrong) is this:

1) She has never worked in the banking industry before, so don’t know that Japanese banks are run in a different way compared to the rest. Maybe she thinks it’s equivalent to other foreign banks like HSBC, Citi, Stan Chart, ANZ etc

2) As a result she thinks this is a “golden opportunity” of a lifetime to break into the banking industry; that explains all this panic and nervousness over a very simple and straight forward recruitment process

3) She likely misunderstands how titles work in the banking industry and thinks that a manager is a middle level position and the bank is impressed enough to call her down to interview for a relatively senior position even though she has no direct experience. That may explain why she seems so worried about how tough and demanding the process will be and how specialised and technical the job is.

That explains. Anyone knows the Hierarchy for Japaneses Bank? Assistant manager, then promote to deputy manager and then to manager, assistance general manager, deputy general manager? For assistant manager, got $5000? How would you compare a Japanese Bank and a China Bank?
