Default Marketing Career

Hi all! newbie here, just a short profile on myself below

Age: 25
Working Exp:1year 2 months
Monthly Income:$2520
Industry: F&B
Education: SIM-RMIT

All marketing professionals out there, from what i see from job ads,the job function is kind of specialised and segmented into industries.Ie,if i do not have FMCG experience it will be very hard for me to enter, same applies for consumer electronics etc. These 2 are the ones that i aim to enter, being that they pay relatively better from what i see in job ads and salary reports( correct me if i'm wrong)....and for a marketing executive- manager it will take me a good 5 years to reach there with a minimum 5k salary which will only enable me to really be self independent ,pay bills and start a family...

Honestly speaking,my current job scope & salary is not that ideal anyway, its a choice between seizing what's in front of me and waiting and waiting,i can't afford to wait but i always hope that for the next step,i can advance to where i hope to get.

Hope to get some advice and start a discussion from seasoned professionals for me to reach my career goal, when i do not have the most relevant experience,or what i can do to further myself ? Thanks

Have to be realistic with your expectation to double salary in 5 years, very hard to get min 15% increase every year for a SIM grad who is in a back office support job.

You are lucky to be earning quite well for an SIM graduate. Just focus on doing your best but don't hope too much for a big jump in salary. Expect to get $3500 after 5 years. You can already start a family after 5 years. Assuming your wife earns $3500, your combined income of $7000 is more than enough to buy a 3 room BTO. Even someone earning $1000 can buy a 2 room BTO. Marry fast, get your two kids fast and by the time you are 55, your kids are grown up. Don't be like my friend who got married at 40 and now at 45 is handling a baby. Why 2 kids? They can each contribute monthly allowance when they grow up, if they don't support you, you can sue them since we have the parents maintenance bill.

You just buy a piece of paper from SIM and expect to immediately double your salary in 5 years - I think even local grads with FC honours in MNCs not easy to increase pay that fast.

My advise is you go and take up a sales job and commission base if you want to get quick money.

ok..seems like things are kind of even more challenging than what i thought to be.I have been looking at various salary reports and glassdoor to arrive to that assumption..am i right to say that marketing pays relatively lower than other functions...?

My friend works as a project coordinator in the construction industry,he was drawing 2k just right out of NS with just a diploma, after working 2 years he is on 3k with car allowance. He's working in a small firm btw.He did mention that he have female friends in the same industry (faster head start without NS)drawing close to 4k with just 4 years experience...On the other hand,my auditor friend with a mid-size auditing firm mentioned that his salary rise will be pretty stable as they go by rank& file seniority, so he will get pay rise every year...even if he just perform moderately without being outstanding..He's on 2.7k with 1 year experience.

Thats why this make me kind of disheartened at my potential earning prospect for this job function..its hard not to compare while managing with the high costs of living and future expenses. The problem is i don't think i can cut it in sales as i'm not thick skin enough but i have passion for marketing since my poly days.I am very clear on this.

I don't think the problem is industry per se, other than the few super hot ones like FI, O&G, Management Consulting which with your SIM qualification no chance to get inside, the rest are roughly the same.

A typical average grad gets 4-5% salary increase every year and 1 promotion increase worth 10-15% every 3-4 years, this is assuming you don't kana a recession which will result in pay freeze, cut or even retrenchment. I think the problem is more of your expectation, you need to be more realistic and not expect progression like a MAP associate in a MNC.

If you can get 3.5-3.8k when you are 30, combine with wife this is enough to buy a BTO and live life decently. My advice is don't need to be hung up over some random number like 5k before settling down.

Pffffft, its not that difficult to double your salary if its only 2k-2.5k as long as your hop around and your experience is marketable. Much easier if you are in the banking industry.

I started at 2k doing banking ops and after 5 years I was at $4.4k liao. Currently at $6.3k after 8 years.

Doubling pay is not hard.

My first job as credit analyst was 2.6k, now drawing 10.7k after 6 years, just jump job every year and ask for at least 30% per jump.

You don't need to job hop, important thing is to stay with a good company. I stayed with my first company for 4 years and start from 3,000 and left at 6,795. For marketing try to join the big boys advertising firms to build up CV.
