Between AM-M, it will depends on the firm situation at that time. Sometimes they will play with a 2yr AM system, or a M0 system.

So you will hit M1 at the start of 6th year, or maybe 7th year. Then you will hit M3 in 8th or 9th year. Promotion between associate to SM is a certainty for most ppl unless your performance is shaky. It is rare but it does happen. Reasons such as making mistakes that piss off clients or managers, or having a fairly obvious lack of ability (usually accounting knowledge) to do work properly

At least you can claim taxi and OT allowance. When the budget is so crap, firm expects you to ot but not take cab or record the hours.

A1->A2 1 year
A2->S1 1 year
S1->S2 1 year
S3->M1 1 year
M1->M2 1 year
M2->M3 1 year

Total 6 years if no major screw up

How many stay until SM?

My batch by the time SA more than 2/3 gone, during AM left less than a handful, now M 0 left.

Audit turnover is high. But I don't think people should stay in their first job for 8 years even for other industries.

It helps to think of your career every 3-5 years. Don't wait till you oldies then start thinking of your first mid career switch. The inertia and comfort zone is too high

The so called promotion/progressions are just titles artificially created to show there are progression but in actual fact it is the same position. I.e senior and managers are 3 years each. You dont tell people you are M3, only audit managers.

The higher increments are due to the audit firms squeezing/frontloading alot more working hours into a work year.

I.e You can get $500 increment in a year because you worked 10,000 hours in one year. You might also get $500 increment in commercial if you worked 10,000 hours just that you might take 2 years to clock the same hours.

So ultimately it depends on whether you treasure work life balance and starting a family. Big 4 is losing out now because there are new industries and positions opening up that can offer the same compensation with less punishing hours. Basically it is a sunset industry.
