Semiconductor & manufacturing are sunset industries. And IT industry, we face strong competition from outside. I don't know where else to go. Construction? R&D? Sales? But see tons of sales jobs out there.

you asked the correct question. but the industries are as such.

manufacturing and semicon belonged to the 80s where modern industrialisation took place. TVs, radios, telephones, are being made.

IT belonged to the 90s where telecommunication era erupted. Computers, mainframes, programming were in demand.

Internet era was last decade's Franco. People started to trade and invest online. Funds and money hot rushed at the split seconds. With rapid fingers come instant processing at equity and funds' trading. The funds were transferred in kind to property. But I also believe mass immigration and cross country talent scouting started to burst forth since last decade, esp more so with the increase in traffic flow. Bankers and properties' liaisons were the hottest thing.

Now, to bring it further, normally we continue from the last episode - banking and property industry. In the 80s, an Engineer carries the same prestige as a Banker or Lawyer, not factoring payscale. But not so for now. In the 90s, Programmers sounds posh as well.

Going forward, bankers still sound great, but how many successful bankers or banking related (front desk, middle or back roles) functions are there left for us to fill? Even property?

My guess is as good as yours because we are predicting another 10 years from now. or maybe 20.

But it would not be the jobs of the past, which we have seen.

Don't take me for that: but i'm predicting a recession first, then the market will adjust itself. Jobs will resound to the new market then. Not a crash or depression, but recession.

If you ask me now, banking roles are still great, but be prepared to switch careers as and when thereof.

Nice and honest reply, thoughtful.

is the industry facing sunset moments because the workers are mostly non-degree holders?

I understand most of the seniors here are being retrenched or replaced by foreign talents. but could it be due to lack of formal qualifications?

What is I have a degree or masters and intend to pursue a career in this industry?

Most of the people I spoke to and being retrenched are actually diploma holders. They had earned about $5k and being asked to leave at their late 30s. However, they informed me that their peers whom are holding degrees are not facing the same issue.

Even if their peers are facing the same issue such as retrenchment, it's not as rampart.

The other point to take note is that, retrenchment is across other industries as well, not only in semiconductor industries.

Default salary

There is some great information about salaries listed on http://www.glassdoor.com as well as common interview questions and reviews from current and past employees about what it is like to work at certain companies. might be worth a look.

I work for a niche recruitment consultancy which specialises in semiconductor jobs and microelectronics jobs and there are certainly still opportunities out there to earn fantastic money in this industry. If anybody in this forum is looking for their next semiconductor job then please see our website http:www//mrlcg.com and get in touch.
