By right, ur sup supposed to decide on renewal and convey to HR 2 - 2.5 months before contract expiry. HR supposed to call u to sign 1 - 1.5 months before expiry.
However, I'd heard of some getting a confirmed renewal only less than 2 weeks before expiry.
So yes, best to start finding elsewhere if no news.
Technically, it is not auto sayonara, but at the period when the contract lapses and absolutely zero action is taken (as opposed to a proper expiry whereby HR wudve kickstarted offboarding), technically, either side can suddenly say "k thnx bai" without notice or anything. Of course, so far, nothing of that has actually happened.

I got emplacement after one year. They informed me 3 weeks before.
For 2 years contract, usually will auto continue unless you are sooooo bad… imagine the hassle to find another replacement for u and if the replacement don come in fast, who will do your work? The other colleagues will have to cover and is a vicious cycle…
It takes 2 hands to clap

Nice you converted, must be very good performer! So the auto continue means extend another 2yrs?
My team mate confirmed above average, also didn’t get emplacement after one year (on 2yr contract) wor.
I think I don’t want to take the risk to find jobs last minute, very tiring, any interview also need to take. If HR wanna stop losing people, they should probably consider informing earlier.
I left my previous role due to this too, don’t like last min notification. Haha.
