Default Choosing Between Oxford MFE and SMU Juris Doctor

Hi,

I'm at a significant crossroads in my academic and career journey and could really use your insights! I've been fortunate enough to get accepted into the Oxford Master of Financial Economics (MFE) and the SMU Juris Doctor program. I'm still waiting on the results from the NUS Juris Doctor program.

A little background: The Oxford MFE is a 9-month program, whereas a typical Juris Doctor in Singapore spans 3 years. My parents are supportive and willing to fund my education. My undergraduate studies were in Architecture, where I graduated with a First-Class Honours, and I've also scored 338/340 on the GRE. Additionally, I've applied to master's programs in Finance and Financial Engineering at NUS, NTU, and overseas institutions like MIT, Yale, and Columbia.

Here's where I need your advice:

Passion: Although my background is in design, I find myself passionate about various fields. My experience includes internships at several architecture firms, where I adapted to the intense 996 work culture. Both law and finance intrigue me equally, as I've spent a few months exploring the teaching materials in both domains.

Salary Concerns: Salary is a primary consideration for me. While the salary structure in big 4 law firms is quite transparent, I'm curious about the prospects in the job market for someone with a master's in finance, especially without a relevant bachelor's degree.

I'm torn between these paths and would really appreciate your perspectives, especially from those who might have been in similar situations or have insights into these career fields.

TL;DR: Accepted into Oxford MFE and SMU Juris Doctor, with a background in Architecture and high GRE scores. Seeking advice on career prospects and salary expectations in finance vs. law.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You asked this on a high fin track - it looks like you have already made up your mind and would like just a bit of assurance.

TLDR, if you can make it, high finance will pay more. Quite similar to where you might want to aim for, I switched into high finance post MBA (M7) with an (arguably non related) audit background via a BB MBA associate program. Assuming you go to Oxford, you might be able to apply for analyst programs in many shops post your degree.

My advice would be to figure out what you want to do now, heavily network and bag a summer internship and convert from there. Good luck!

How old are you? This is important when it comes to switching careers in a completely different field. While you may think that coming from a 996 culture could be particularly helpful, hiring managers typically prefer fresh grads with relevant internship experience when it comes to buy-side / front office roles.

In my opinion, if salary is a primary concern, a JD would be better, but that is only if you're sure you'd be able to stay for 5-6 years. It is not easy getting into a good role as a MFE graduate, especially without relevant experience. You'd likely end up in a valuation role in a consulting company which pays ~5k starting. A career in law scales a lot quicker.

Default Possible to break into IB?

Hi All,

I (27Y/O, 2 YOE, NUS non-biz grad ) am looking to break into high finance after working in another field for 2 years. I have enrolled in a Msc in Asset Management programme and will be studying that part time for a year.

My plan is to quit my current job in Q1 next year, and hopefully land a good IB internship at a MM or BB bank (around midway through my course). In the meantime , because I work with the start up ecosystem and also some large companies in a specific sector, I was thinking of "consulting" for them outside of work on a pro-bono basis to establish some M&A and VC experience over 6 months. Of course, I will also be networking hard with my course mates, alumni, friends already in the Industry and through LinkedIn.

I am hoping to either join as a mid/early career hire at an BB IB or a top asset management firm / hedge fund / family office .

I wonder if you guys have any advice or feedback on my plan and if it is realistic.
