yeah, micron pays more, 3.8 for 2nd upper. however, it is an entirely different industry. have to think long and hard before joining, in sg micron does a large variety of engineering functions. their main function is device manufacturing for microchips. i agree micron is a good place to start (renowned in semiconductor world), you must really know what you are getting yourself into. it is hard to get transferable skills esp in semiconductor manufacturing. if you change your mind about the industry in the future(many do), will be hard to switch out. overall, the state of engineering sector in sg is sad...

Whats with the dismay amongst engineers in Singapore? Given that engineering is such a difficult degree to complete, wouldn't the prospects for engineers be great given the high barrier to entry for this profession?

Are u even from engineering industry ? The degree itself is dam hard but the pay and responsibility don't even match. U do know that engineering courses in poly/uni is considered dumping ground right ? Atleast in SG.

The barrier to enter engineering is not high but in fact lowest. Its a dumping ground at NTU and NUS. Whoever that cannot enter business, accountancy, life sciences or what so ever will be direct to Engineering.

Take reference to Poly intake, for example SP:

s://.sp.edu.sg/sp/admissions/admissions-exercises/admission-criteria/course-intake-and-jae-elr2b2

If you cannot qualify for anything. Go for engineering.

cheers
Currently working in one the companies mentioned and generally speaking Mott Mac/Surbana have good wage increase, but their work seems to have dried up in recent times.

CPG/Meinhardt the less said the better

Generally, for consultancies one begins as a graduate engineer and becomes an engineer after 2 years, salary is about ~4K w no bonus.

After 4-5 years, salary would be ~5k-5.5k, with 0.5 mths bonus.

0.5 months bonus.....and this salary of 5-5.5k stays stagnated after that for several years. exactly why engineers want to leave the industry...

What's wrong with this? I don't see anything wrong with this amount.
In fact, it is at the higher end of the spectrum already.
