Default what are the jobs should i be considering?

dear all,

I'm currently a mech engin student in a local uni. Will graduate next year (expected 1st class honours).

People have been telling me to take up a government job because of my good results. I wish to get an engineering job with good prospects, opportunities to go overseas, and of cos with attractive benefits. Don't mind working under the sun with dirty conditions.

If I still think of better choices, most likely I will try to apply for a job as an airforce engineer.

I'm lost. Any suggestions?

Have you considered the local listed firms like sembcorp and keppel. They have good pay, similiar to civil service , and can feed your ambition of working under sun with dirty conditions, travel overseas etc to learn the ropes of the business...

I am familiar with both companies recuritment process and i can say they are rather fair.

Go to portal, apply for the management trainee role. If you do have 1 class honors, i think you will stand a chance to get an interview at least.

Dont give up if you didnt get a reply on your first try if you are doing that route. Please understand, that most companies, HR is run by low level administrator whom is overwhelmed with CVs. It is really hard for them to run through the >1000 CVs every month for just 1 roel.
So sometimes a bit of luck / connections will help.

All the best. I do wish more singaporeans will work for singapore companies. We need to build this country up and i think this is one way i feel is a fair way of meeting our personal goals of income and ambitions.

"I wish to get an engineering job with good prospects, opportunities to go overseas, and of cos with attractive benefits."

Can't blame you for your naivety. After all, you are a fresh university grad.

Go check out what they say about engineering jobs in this forum.

You will learn a lot from those "been there, done that".

Engineering is a league dominated by foreigners. If you think your expected first-class honours can allow you to shine or get a job with good prospects, you really need to rethink.

Those who have been in engineering line, be it in Oil/Gas, Semicon, engineering services, etc. will know that engineering bosses are OBSESSED with COST. QUALITY of work is secondary. They don't might getting a foreign engineer who produces works sub-par standards. So long as they are cheap to hire.

As a would-be first-class honours grad, can you accept a pay deemed sub-par? If not, the boss would have no hesitations to get some foreign engineers 'cos they are a dime a dozen!!!

since you are keen to work abroad, why don't you try applying overseas directly instead of limiting yourself to S'pore based jobs?

Europe and the US may be tough given the job market, but maybe Asia is an option. Look at Hong Kong - conglomerates like Swire (which is the majority owner of Cathay Pacific) or MTR have good management trainee programs and they take international graduates.

Swire also has a stake in Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO), which could be up your alley.
