Retiring In Thailand

My wife and I are in our mid fifties. We feel very stressed at work. Thinking of early retirement. This idea of retiring in Thailand is very attractive. We don't have any debt and we have a passive income of $60k pa. Our net worth including our flat is $1.8m. We will explore this further.

If you're very stressed at work, it is best you change to a less stressful one or retire, because if you continue, you can get depression, heart attacks and may have suicidal thoughts.

Retiring early is a good idea as it allows you to have a more peaceful life. You may want to fill your time in exercising, going for nature walks, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and volunteer at local charities and orphanages. You can also read books and write books. All these activities will give you a more rounded meaningful life rather than slogging like a dog in the office and get involved in office politics and back biting.

CM is a good place to retire, you can also travel to Koh Samui, Phuket, Krabi to enjoy the beautiful nature of these places.

My experience is that S$1,000 per month will not get you a comfortable retired living in Chiang Mai. Look up on youtube this guy called JC with his retired asia videos. He helps US retirees plan their retirement in TH and he lives in CM himself. He categorizes a retiree with a US$750 pm income as Category 1 ie you live in a 1-bedroom condo or Thai-style apartment and eat mostly street food.

Seriously, if you want a comfortable living and to be able to travel within TH and back to SG occasionally, I think a couple will need B50,000 (S$2,000) upwards, excluding rent.

You can easily rent out your HDB flat for $3500 - $4000 pm, so $2000 pm to finance your retirement in CM is no problem. I look forward to this to retire.

Yes, you can. Go to propertyguru, many are renting at $4000, some even at $6000 pm.

This idea of retiring in Thailand is excellent. Is there a retirement village in Chiang Mai? If there is a retirement village in Chiang Mai catering to just Singaporeans, this will be great. The gated retirement village can have many facilities such as swimming pool, gym, food stall selling Singapore food, clinics which allow the use of our CPF Medisave, supermarket. In this way, the retirees don't have to worry about speaking Thai and can retire in luxury for $1000 per month.

This is a good opportunity for Singapore developers. Instead of building more condos in Singapore (Singapore has oversupply of condos now), they can build and operate retirement villages exclusively for Singaporeans in Chiang Mai.

Yes I totally agreed with you.

My HDB neighbor rented her 5-room flat for $8K per month. You can use that monthly rental to live like a king in foreign land.

$4-6K is too low.
