My income is 240k per annum. I am 31. I am in advertising.

There are many things I want to buy but are out of my reach. Life's unfair isn't it?

I am 27, earn 120k base pay a year. My partner earns 36k base. We do not qualify for BTO / EC (even on revised income ceiling), and do not have enough cash to pay down deposit for private condo. For financial/personal reasons, have ruled out the HDB resale market. So we are stucked, staying at my parent's place (whilst our friends from Uni already have got their BTO / EC flats).

A couple of reasons why we don't have savings:
1. Being a SG citizen (NS..), only started work in 2008. Bonus was not good during the financial crisis.
2. Didn't watch expenditure/ Didn't have proper saving discipline (not extravagant but wasted alot of money on non-essentials)
3. Bad investor.. put money in wrong stocks

Learnt 2 things:
1. 10k per month is not great in SG.
2. More impt than monthly income, is saving/investment saviness. Earning money is impt, what you do with the money is even more impt.

A few months ago, was tempted to buy an EU car because colleagues were all driving BMs/Audis etc. Till my one day my big boss gave me a lift to a client's place. He definitely earns the most in my dept, (being a MD level), at least S$1-2milliona year. I was shocked when I realise he drives a Honda. Later, I asked him whether he is a "car" person, he told me that he had 3 kids moving to university age and he wanted to make sure he saved enough to send them overseas to pursue education paths they wanted.

Reminded me of my own parents who scrimmed and save to send me overseas to study. That moment made me decide not to buy the EU car...

He is being very disrespectful to the company as well as clients who he may need to pick up from the airport or give a lift to.

The difference between a Honda and an entry level Mercedes E Class is not that great for someone earning "S$1-2milliona year".

What sort of image is his trying to project? That your company's margins are very low so customers please don't squeeze us? In that case his should mandate that all employees drive Hondas and below to project a consistent corporate image.

I find it funny that you wanted to buy a european car when you can't even afford a roof over your head.

You can't afford a roof despite your relatively high earning power, and yet you were contemplating paying for a relatively expensive car.

This explains why you are still so poor even though you make much more than more people your age.

We need more people like you, so we average earners can accumulate more wealth, invest well, and surpass you guys at the end of the marathon.
