Hi everyone, this is my first post. I stumbled upon this forum when I started researching the possibility of returning to Singapore for work. A bit about me, I was in the top 5% of my class from Secondary school to poly. I worked for about a year before I moved to Australia to do a BSc(Hons) where I did a double major in molecular biology and biomedical science. I graduated with first class Hons. I got a full scholarship to do my PhD (medicine and pharmacology) and graduated from UWA in 2007. I've been working as a research fellow since then. My current gross monthly salary is about SGD$8000. Could I please find out what the job prospects in Singapore for someone like me? I've been successful with grant applications in Australia. I am funded (salary + two research assistants) until 2014 but I'd like to get a feel for what is happening in Singapore.

In terms of my work experience, I have done 2 post-docs at Monash. I have supervised 2 PhD students to completion and 4 Hons students to completion. I currently do some guest lecturing and some tutoring but mostly my interactions are with postgrad students within a research environment.

I'd love to get some idea of what the salaries, opportunities and job landscape is in Singapore.

Thanks in advance.

you come back to SG, you will need to serve your Reservist ICT and IPPT/RT if you are no excuse if you are a male.

and your pay, most likely will be 5.5-6.5k range i guess, can try applying to A*STAR

bloody hell, that sounds tragic! Sounds like I won't be moving home in a hurry then! I'm on tenure track at the moment, so I might just wait to see if prospects are any better with professorship. I realise that Singapore is all about status and the paperwork to prove one's mettle. I did hope that I already had enough to secure a half-decent offer but it sure doesn't sound like it!

Gotcha. And thanks for your candour. Much appreciated.

I did consider A*star but their current fellowships are for clinician-scientists (this has not always been the case). I am guessing this is because they are pushing for translational medicine for the moment. The only way I would join A*star would be as a lab head, since I currently lead my own lab in Australia and couldn't face being in a post-doc position in SG. I've come to really enjoy the creative flexibility of running my own projects and seeing my work published.
