Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Hi, can anyone share what it is like to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)? I hear people there work late everyday, but let's face it nobody goes home at 6 on the dot anymore. So how late exactly is 'late' in the MFA? Also what is the difference between the 1. Functional and Corporate role and 2. Political and Economic role. Last but not least what is the starting pay for an MFA officer fresh out of a public uni.
Some background about myself, I am a law grad with 2nd upper hons and am seriously considering making the jump to the foreign service where I think I would be more fulfilled than pushing paper all day long.

MFA is one of the ministries with the heaviest workload. At peak periods, you can work till midnight for several days or weeks (source: friend who is a Foreign Service Officer).
That said, you have to undergo their gruelling 3-stage interview process.
1st stage - half a day with a large group of ~20 ppl
2nd stage - full day at am assessment centre evaluating aspects such as logical/analytical thinking, how quick you are to think on the spot, presentation skills, writing skills etc.
3rd stage - panel interview with senior management
(source: I went thru the 1st 2 stages)
Not too certain about current starting pay but I think at least 5-6k for FSO

Are you mx12? If couple of hundreds less then you should also be nearing the mx12 ceiling, which is 5.8k. What position are you in?

Is anyone aware if the merit increment is linked to CEP?

Yes. The higher your merit increment quantum, the higher your CEP. Say if your CEP is lower, your merit increment will be lesser so that you will take a longer time to hit the ceiling of your eventual CEP grade. If your CEP is high, your salary also has more room to grow and when you are near the ceiling, higher chance of getting a recommendation for promotion to the next grade.

Working in MOH
Anyone can share the culture in MOH?
Also, I see a post I'm interested in but it's for Manager role whilst I'm currently a SM. Will they even bother to look a my resume and is it a practice to offer a higher position than advertised?

Senior management are quite good to staff. middle management, depending on your division, can be capable and genuinely look out for you, but some are just here till retirement i.e. simply deadweight. And even worse they might think they're very smart and their opinion matters but actually they hold up the process and bring no value to the table whatsoever.
There are ministry-wide events and activities you can go for, but again depending on your role you might be too busy to go, especially for policy work. You can definitely come at 9 and leave at 5.30 (I'm referring to those who have little work to do and not those who are efficient); no one would openly criticise you for it. At most it'll just be reflected in your appraisal (low grade).
Wrt your 2nd qn, the job posting would either indicate AM/M or M/SM. Your final rank depends on a combination of factors - I can only think of a few as I'm not in HR - but these would be your last drawn salary, your last drawn pay, the budget set aside for the new staff and whether they is a vacancy at tbe SM level. I haven't heard of any working levek staff getting bumped up to the next level if the job posting clearly indicates they're looking for someone at the lower level. But it could be possible if you're a good negotiator and an outstanding candidate, and they're desperate to hire.
