Why should there be a difference on the quality of people employed? The civil service has a higher responsibility to make sure the right and good people are supporting the country.

At the end of the day, people just want to earn money and go back home. There’s no point trying to find “good and right people” for the sake of the country and the civil service lol. If you don’t want to be yesman to your boss and try to oppose to whatever he has to say (when he clearly isn’t asking), don’t be surprised and cry wolf if others become yesman and steal your promotion / bonus / career / wife / house.

Just a LPT, welcome to singapore folks

Doesn’t have to be dichotomous. Just because one doesn’t “say yes” to everything their boss says, does not mean one has to be rude or “challenge” their boss. It’s all about how skillful and tactful you are in presenting ideas to bosses (and their bosses) that show you have taken all considerations, including theirs, on board. If everyone says yes to everything just to carry bosses, even when an alternative is clearly better, are we really doing what’s right and fair for the stakeholders we serve? A good boss will appreciate the care and thought you give to your work. And if your boss can’t appreciate that, then it’s just too bad for the organization, and you will need to work extra hard, work more strategically to replace him/her.

So yeah, good for you re: your promotions and bonuses, but hope your integrity is still intact too.
