New joined here. Very disappointed that I got a default c grade. Another guy that joined one week before me got a c+. Guess I know where I stand now.

Anything from C- to C+ is ok, most people fall within this range 90% of the time. Sometimes whether you are C- or C or C+ is almost random.

Does anyone know the proportion of C, B and A?

AD is more or less a guaranteed for local uni degree holder unless you screw up big time or really piss somebody high up. Even a below average performer at C level will reach AD after 20+ years of service. In fact there are so many people stuck at AD that more & more ministries are creating another artifical level called SAD to cater for those who cannot make it to DD and yet still have many years to go before retiring.
that's so SAD. lol..

On average, out of 10 people, 1 will get D, 7 will get C, 2 will get B. If bosses are hardworking, out of the 2 Bs, 1 will get an A. But only if the bosses are hardworking coz for the person to get an A the bosses need to write a lot of reports to justify the A...

So yup, C is the norm.

Anyone know what is the difference between PA's PAL 5a and PAL 5b scheme? Are they equivalent to MX12 or MX11?
Is the jump from 5a to 5b automatic?

Is it true that career advancement will be a real challenge in civil service? I've heard of stories where friend were enticed by relatively higher starting salary, but stagnate for a few years. As a local uni undergrad and without stellar class in honours, I am concerned about the prospects in civil service plus the fact that there are tonnes of scholars :/ As a first career would it be better to not join then?

well, whats ur expectation? average performers in civil service with normal degrees generally stagnate at AD or SAD level. thats anywhere from 100-140k all-in. if this is good enough for u then stagnate is not really a concern.

but if u r those who think ur on the road to 400-600k type then of course pte sector better. but reality is also that most ppl in pte sector end up even lower than a stagnated civil servant, not to mention getting terminated when they are older.

up to u really.
