this happened to me.

it was a job posting for diploma holders or lower.

from a statboard that deals with the sea.

they told me directly that they could not proceed my application to the next/final stage of interview if i didnt have any referees to provide.

end up, i rly couldnt proceed with the interview.

but heng i got another offer from another SB that's not so strict like the former.

lesson learnt below:
1) referees may or may not be so important, see your luck

2) dont put all your eggs in 1 basket (meaning to say, apply as many jobs as you can n as far n wide as possible. u'll nvr know how each M or SB behaves/treats your application)

Some stat boards do not require any referees, while some stat boards request your former supervisor as a referee.

dey
nobody ask u to suck up to bosses or tripod their LPs blindly.
during normal work, just do your due necessary, don't think they can stun u like stone cold stunner
keep it as professional work relations
if need them to be your ref, just ask them
but of course don't assume they will auto pilot by default help u
if for whatever reason the person u approach decline to be your ref, so be it.
look for other folks lor

its very transactional to ask someone to be your referral if you left on neutral or worse terms and never contact them after you leave for x+days since you quit

it is what it is
lets face it
work is pretty much transactional no matter how u scope it

even for my current temp role, i made known to my previous RO tt I am not closing the doors to perm/full time role cos there's no guarantee of employment and very practical reasons one besides the usual yabadaba benefits, recognition etc

and hence I still went to full time opening interviews
at least right now finally could be getting the formal indicative offer after all the admin clearance + submission done.

How come some position put you will be notified if you are shortlisted or not 4 weeks after closing but then never notify you that you are not shortlisted?

perhaps they go by assumption that if u didnt receive any direct response / notification after the 4 weeks or so, u can take it as buang liao lor
