Do you think u can get higher pay outside in MNCs?
I am now in a dilemma now on whether to go private.
B.Eng chemical 2nd upper grad in 2010.
I am now in a stat board quite decent pay. abt 3.5k
but the work is getting boring and my frens/bros in private sectors increments (no promotions ) are like 300 or 400.. Promotions abt 700-800...
Stat board increments r like 2-3% average...
A lot of my coursemates r in oil/petrochem/pharma which pays well.

But its with a price to pay... need to sacrifice more personal time, may need work shift etc... also i heard they pay u more is bcos of the risk inherent in the working environment...

i do not like the idea of wearing coverall inspecting the petrochemical plants in jurong island , in fact i dont really like hardcore engineering, reading P& ID etc.
I am ok with a bit of technical stuff but i am more interested in the commercial aspects or interplay of technical and commerical aspects in oil/gas industry, however do not have opportunity. Just nice a stat board offered me within 24 hrs of interviewing me so i accepted.

so far in my 3.5 years in ST, annual increment or promotion is between +$80 to +$130 only...really fug up one!!! in year 2009, we even freeze pay!!!

well the figures refer to MNCs (specifically EPCs for oil/gas/petrochem/pharma sector) Sources are from my frens/relatives.
the figures for oil majors like exxon/shell are even higher.
Keppel bonuses are like 8-12mths . Shell pay get doubled by end of 5 yrs, some say increments of 20% yearly.

Hi blackswan,
Am chem eng grad in 2009, currently working in private (pay sux) and thinking of jumping ship to Stat Board. Do you mind sharing which stat board r u currently working in? As the stat board that I am going into pays me quite low looking at the fact that i have 2 yrs exp.
TIA!
