2. And then during interview, you cannot say things like, "I do enjoy socialising with my colleagues after work over a BEER." They cannot handle alcohol. You must pretend you don't know what is beer. Civil service got nobody socialise after work. Say you like jogging.
hi bobo, many thanks. you are of great help indeed! I really hope to have more feedback from BOBO or anyone who can help out!
incidentally, as I'm posting this for a change of job, i just got called in by my boss. 2.5mths into my current job, my boss just gave me a close to 15% pay increment! In fact I have already sounded out to my boss that this job is madness and that there is no work life balance (prob thats the reason he decided to give an increment)
after reading through like 57 threads in the salary.sg forum and looking for a chance of job, i realise that i might just be holding the very dream of job 80% of the those posting here - rapid increment and room for growth.
still, i have no desire to stay on. in fact, as i was telling this to my boss or prob in a rather hinting manner, he outrightly told me that the director which I am directly working under draws a 15k salary with min 4mth (combined) bonus. Just like you, i was shocked by his sudden outburst, then he carried on talking about BMWs (for me its bus mrt walking), apartments and luxuries and stuff. BTW, my director which I am working under is only 32 this year, but he has published many books under the company name.
then, my boss told me that "you are essentially on the same track as him and the sky is the limit. as you are new here, we cannot just contract with you as a cirriculum director or upper secondary head, but i can assure you that we have plans for you and that you are reaching there soon, you know.. we are willing but we cannot just say that you are…. Also, you need to be more patient and give yourself more time to prove that you are capable. We can see the drive in you….. (blah)” Anyways, I had been very driven for success 2 mths ago till I realise:
1. $ is good and so is promotion – increased workload is not
2. The sky is the limit – I’m a land animal and I am “down to earth” I am unable to sustain my efforts
3. Those drawing an income in excess of 10k are all unmarried – “Miss and bachelor” they are indeed eligible bachelor – eligible for work and bachelor forever.
4. No worklife balance – I am burning out. My off days are spent in the company. I am increasing disgruntled, stressed and losing friends. Most of you here have long chinese new year long-weekends. For me, weekends are my peak.
5. I have no time to reflect on life and that is if I have one.
I hope that those reading this post can understand my situation. I might just be holding the dream job that you are ogling at, yet, listen to my word of advise – how long can you sustain?
By any standards, I am very very far away from my upcoming plans – to settle down. As you are reading my post or rants, I hope that you can understand my frustration. Also, being the bosses’ pet (he greets me more than I greet him, what the???) and inviting me for lunch wherenever he sees me, I am too ATTRACTING ATTENTION! To the extent that my CFO, fyi another Miss is deeply jealous of me. She almost threw my paycheck in my face today. No one offends her as she gives out $$. I have NO colleagues in the company, it seems that besides my boss, all are out to maul me. My job is like dubai where pple come to make o big buck and go back home to sleep. Job satisfaction? You think abt it yourself

Sorry very long post.
To bobo and any kind hearted soul.
Some of my questions are unanswered. I’m looking at regular hours and 5 days week as I’m planning to get settled down soon.
Can I know if the MOM really offer worklife harmony such that the working hours are fixed and 5days as promised? I do not mind working on some weekends just not like now. I also do not mind the lower starting salary as to balance out my life, stability and security is my concern
I see this from the career.gov (MOM):
“The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) aims to build a globally competitive workforce and a great workplace for a cohesive society and a secure economic future for all Singaporeans. In a rapidly changing global economic landscape, Singapore’s workforce and workplace practices have to remain adaptable. MOM’s policies help enhance the workforce’s profile, promote lifelong employability and income security for Singaporeans, as well as foster excellent working environments that are fair, safe and engage and develop our human capital. As an MOM officer, you will get to work in a range of exciting areas to help the Ministry attain its goals, from manpower policy to industrial relations, and workplace safety to foreign employment regulation.

MOM is a progressive, employee-centric organisation that believes in professional development and promoting work-life harmony to allow its staff to harmonise work and personal needs. We are also proud of our diverse workforce. Whether you are a fresh graduate, mid-career professional or a retired individual, we believe that you will bring unique skills and talents that we can harness towards our mission”
I also see that they take in pple from all levels – freshies, mid career. Does that mean that they have a more friendly environment. Sometimes, interviews we just cannot gauge much. Look at me now, my boss told me different things from what I have expected regarding work life balance
I’m a guy BTW
Thank you!!

Are you working for govt (MOE), a school or an assessment book publisher (EPH)?

Don't worry. Maybe your boss is also looking for an exit too.

Since you are publishing stuff, have you considered coming out and be your own boss? I have a business proposition. If you are interested let me know.

To the forumer asking about MOM.

I would say that MOM is quite a progressive organisation. From what I know, the hours are decent, though of course there would be times when you need to work late, as with most jobs. They value their employees. If you are good, your career path is planned for you. I know of non-scholars in MOM who are doing quite well. They also have a job rotation policy. So you get to try and be exposed to a larger variety of work.

i am impressed by yr boss's talks... no wonder he's the boss.

there can only be one director... below this director there are many others who wants to fill his position. Of these many others, only ONE can be the lucky one. You think it could be you, with only 2.5 mths of experience? how about those with 2-5 yrs of experience?

workplace is a place for work.. not for making friends. learn to work together. seems like ur boss is a pretty nice guy. of cos he has to, since u work for him, and credits might probably go to him too.

hello I'm the forumer asking about the MOM

do you have first hand experience regarding the Ministry or your friend that tells you all these?

Would it be convenient to let me know what department your friend is working in?

thank you!

MOM recently obtained Singapore Quality Award. It is a good organisation with a nice culture. You should also check out the awards it obtained from Singapore HR awards organised by SHRI.

I am a civil servant with friends in MOM. Not many of them have resigned/posted out of MOM. They just rotate within MOM.
