If I have to rate the level of quality jobs available for the different degrees, I'll put it this way: Accountancy>/=Biz/Finance/Banking>IT>Engineering>Science>HSS. In summary, technical jobs have basically no values in Singapore since employers can always get cheaper labour elsewhere.
Doing research is not easy to begin with, imagine the number of quality publications one has to produce in order to be 'visible' in the eyes of good PI. I have seen many with average publications going nowhere in the research fields despite being among the best in their cohorts. I still think that instead of spending your precious time in the lab hoping for a miracle to happen, it is better for one to venture out into the corporate world if opportunity arises. Aside from that, I dun think locals would wanna lead a life similar to those foreign researchers whereby they are really hardworking and desperate to the extent that they could spend more than 16 hrs a day in the lab doing research...

you are wrong bro, engineering degrees are one of the most versatile around. you can do almost anything.
and just to crush the idea of having a business/accountancy degree = work bank and earn big bucks, try asking some of the seniors. some of them are still unemployed now. also, try asking some accountancy seniors how are their work life balance.

most engineers can do almost anything except get promoted to manager, thats why always end up getting retrench/sack in their late 30s / early 40s as companies prefer to hire cheaper young grads

Shows just how stupid engineers are. The smarter non-engineers take the easier route, marry the prettier girls and earn much more money.

HAHA. As long as you're neither from law or medicine, dont think too highly of yourself. Biz? accountancy? Dont make me laugh. All of you peasants are in the same sinking boat. Doesn't matter what degree you got or from where. As long as its not law or med or dentistry, youre no elite. And thats a FACT. You wont be earning those big bucks and you wont be marrying the pretty girls.

And then the non-engineer managers hiring young grad engineers cannot manage the companies, technical problems keep appearing and they have to resign in disgrace.
SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa resigns

... and she collected tens of millions before resigning in "disgrace". I would want to do that too, any time.
