Default Insights on Post-interview Process

Would appreciate any insights on the following, please:

- Friend made a referral for me to join his agency (Ministry).
- HR got in touch rather quickly to schedule interview.
- Exp/skillsets fit requirements of the job; friend told me I was shortlisted by his boss.
- At 5th week mark post interview, my current company's HR told me the Ministry has reached out to them for reference checks and asked if I would be taking up their offer.
- Since I've yet to receive any offer, I checked in with the HR, who told me that they may take up to 8 weeks due to high no. of applicants they are processing.
- At 6th week mark, friend told me his boss has also sent their HR a chaser.
- I checked in at the 8th week mark; was given the same reply that they are processing my application, may take up to 8 weeks etc.
- Currently its approaching 9 weeks.

Anyone can share any insights on what might be going on? Does HR just needs more time to make the offer? I read that its hiring dept who makes the decision on who to hire. HR wouldn't have a different opinion? Can I safely conclude the offer will come but its just a matter of time?

Thank you.

You can assume that this offer is not coming and move on. There's plenty of cases like this, a quick google and you can find them, mostly on reddit and other forums.

I think what's happening is that they are still interviewing people and stringing you along in case they can't find one that's better. ( Note, better can mean many things, could be that someone is lousier than you BUT willing to take 30% lower pay, so this person would be "better" to hire cause cheaper, etc )

Do not assume the offer will come. Do not tender in advance, and do continue to go for interviews if there are appropriate roles.

Check with HR on what is holding them up and let them know that you will still be going for interview.

Usually if the hiring manager and higher ups are ok + budget is approved, they can make an offer without finishing the reference check. In fact, reference check usually starts after the offer is being made. But maybe it is ministry, so there could be a different order to the hiring process.

After a job interview, the waiting game can be nerve-wracking. It's normal to feel anxious. Companies often take time to review all candidates thoroughly.

All the above replies are accurate. If the co wants you, you will hear from them fairly soon after interview. In such cases, even one week for follow up might be too long. Allowing a candidate to wait too long just screams that they are not that into you, so they are willing to take the risk that they might lose you by not snapping you up fast enough.

No matter how well u think the interview went, don’t assume anything until offer signed and you enter the company. Then different ball game starts.

It is best not to assume that the offer is coming.

Security clearance will take some time.

HR processing is relatively slower in govt related agencies compared to Pte sector.

I dislike reference checks when they haven't confirm you an offer
You cannot tender yet ur current boss know u are going out
Very tricky situation

One thing to common interview questions is that you've already made an impression during the interview, so don't stress too much about what's out of your control. As for the post-interview process, it usually goes like this: After interviews, companies discuss your performance and fit for the role. They might conduct additional interviews or tests for final candidates. This stage can take some time, so patience is key.
