Is the grade for first year always fixed?

I just received my grade today and it is C. My colleague who has just joined last year got a C too. I heard from my colleague that it is possible for a newcomer to get a different though.

did you go thru the appraisal? if you didnt its of cos default c. if you went thru appraisal, yes can be other grade. I got B after my first appraisal cycle
