Unhappy Career Advise needed - Tourism/Hospitality Grad

Hi all, would love to have some advice.

Local diploma + Private Uni degree in tourism/hospitality.

Working experience wise, worked in small boutique hotel as front desk and subsequently assistant manager, then afterwards worked in SME in tourism-related biz for around 2yrs, managerial role but barely hitting 3k salary at age 28, gotta work all weekends and PHs, with zero employee benefit.

Am thinking to switch career to something that has more growth perspective - as well as salary wise. Hospitality industry pay has always been lower than the rest, but now with covid it is getting even tougher.

Any recommendation on what avenues I may explore? Would my managerial experience helps with me getting Managament Trainee programs in some MNC? Or should I try to totally change industry and start from scratch? My concern is that my education and working experience are 90% hospitality and service related - which means I pretty much have no 'skills'.

PS: I have worked as financial planner before for less than a year, due to hating the pushy-sales culture. But I realised there are also financial planner jobs which are fixed hours with decent basic salary? Any insights would be great as well.

Preferably I can find a new job with stable working hours, starting somewhere near 3k as well, with decent employee benefits.. so that on weekends i can take up some part time stints. but am open to all ideas now really Feeling the financial burden upon marriage and baby

Many Thanks.

Sounds like a generic public service office job in a stat board or maybe a healthcare institution would fit your bill.

You will almost certainly:
-earn more than $3k
-enjoy working normal office hours (for most roles)
-have some level of career progression ahead

But your private degree will make it difficult to even enter. It's not impossible, but the odds may be lower for you. Still good to give those a try.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Thanks for the prompt advise.

Stat board wise - does that refer to jobs from careers@gov? Indeed i feel my pte degree will be a challenge. So far I applied twice before and both failed.

Would you have some position roles name which i can search for? are the salaries really easily 3k even for entry level roles? Thanks!

Yes, if you manage to get into entry level degree holder job in the public sector. You can command at least 3.2K salary (with NS)

Avg bonus (including AWS) : 2- 4 months

You can try searching for Senior Executive or Assistant Manager. Those are typical entry level degree holder roles. There may be other titles for suitable entry level roles, but I can't advise of what these are (browse around the Careers@Gov site and find out).

Based on what some others on this forum have said, they might put you on Executive (one rank below Senior Executive) if you have a private degree. You have work experience though, so I'm not sure what position you would be seen as fit for if hired.

Some on this forum have also said that with a private degree you will have zero chance to enter a Ministry, but a tiny chance of getting hired by a Stat Board. I can't verify if it's true but you might wish to note when applying.

Finally...most people have said that it took multiple (many many) applications to various listings to even secure an interview from anything on Careers@Gov. Getting no reply for 2 applications isn't abnormal.

Finding a job is a full time job in itself, and I've been there before. Keep applying and give your best submission for each position you apply too. Don't give up!

OP dont be dishearted.

I had a private degree too but managed to join one of the Stat Boards as a Executive which gives a starting pay above 3K.
I applied for over 20 openings though.

Never give up.
