Hi,
It's been said, "What you have studied may not be what you will apply in the real world".
Another perspective is to understand that higher education teaches us: 'Learn - How to learn'.
Your current course is ok. [Be flexible for career and post-graduate courses though].

Hi zuppy, I came from comp sci background also but I'm not sure why you would limit your career to just software engineers. I would say the comp sci/engineering background have career opportunities for jobs that require logical thinking, analytic mind and problem solving skills.
Depending on your aspiration (software, hardware, process, specialized, etc) there is a whole gamut of job roles that you can work towards. And as you mature in your career and you acquire skills in either people management or providing strategic guidance and vision your role (and pay) will move upward.
Now in term of pay it will not be exceptional at the start but the market does pay for value as you take on bigger role. Hope this helps.
