Some firms just use a pre-set GPA. For example, some firms taken 3.5+ as equivalent to Second Upper and 3.7+ as equivalent to First.
However, because many firms just do not know, or do not care, they broadly rank Summa = First, Magna = Second Upper, and Cum Laude = Second Lower.
Your mileage will vary depending on the firm.

Don't think it's true that SMU summa/magna is higher than NUS 1st/2:1. Every year >20% of SMU's cohort scores 3.7+ GPA (A- average) for modules taken that year to make it on the Dean's List. For NUS's Dean's List (top 10%), some people on the list don't even have A- average. So for SMU >20% of the cohort has A- average or better, but for NUS <10% of the cohort has A- average or better. Since SMU is giving out better grades in general, raising the bar for summa/magna probably evens out the number of people making those degree classifications compared to NUS.

Lol what are you talking about. NUS FCH for law is not based on GPA but their overall class ranking. If you're in the top x% you get FCH. So the GPA does not matter in that sense. There aren't less people getting FCH just because less people average an A- for a particular year. If everyone's grades suck for a particular class year, the average score to get FCH becomes lower for that year.
SMU's summa ranking is also controlled such that only x% will get it (with set/maximum amounts of each grade to give out in classes).
You don't have a harder time getting FCH compared to Summa (in terms of absolute % of students obtaining them) lol.

Don't think this is correct. NUS Law gives you a 1st if your Cumulative Numerical Weighted Average (equivalent of GPA) is A- or above, OR if you're in the top 10% (s://law1a. nus.edu.sg/student_matters/llb_prog/law_grading_coh.html). SMU Law gives you a summa if your GPA is 3.8 or higher (s://commencement. smu.edu.sg/about-commencement/cum-laude-merit-awards). So GPA (or equivalent) is directly linked to your class of honours -- eg, in NUS if you aren't in the top 10% but still have a CNWA of A-, you'll graduate with a 1st.

Lol the average for the top 10% is not A- average. Practically, the straight GPA has never mattered for your class ranking in NUS.
