Hmmm.... this thread title really caught my attention....desperate.

Yes, I am extremely desperate for a Job and I have every reason to be feeling that way.

Nearly 8months after I left uni, despite coming from a reputable overseas uni and armed with rather decent grades, I am still unemployed and looking for work. If this were to drag on any longer, I might just lose my sanity altogether and join in the ranks of discouraged workers......

define "reputable".

if you had graduated from 1 of the local unis, you would have gotten tons of job offers. many of the degree programmes have their grads 100% employed - google for "graduate employment survey".

"reputable" overseas uni probably can't beat that.

I know the feeling of not finding a job as i have been through it before.

There is no magic bullet to help you overcome the feeling, but there are some useful tips to help you cope better

These are my tips and this what i did

1. Exercise - a lot ! A good healthy body is also a good way to minimise expense like doctors + it will improve your looks. I ran the cross country route at mac. reservior nearly every day just to get my mind off feeling what i did. Of course, start progressively . dont overdo it and injure yourself

2. Find a few good friend to talk to . And make sure you talk.
Dont keep it to yourself. Especially if you are a guy.

3. Accept a temp job. I did some temp work while searching. Yes, it sounds horrible..and pay wise, it way was about 1/3 of my first job offer... but what to do, i need some $$$. When interviewers ask me , i said i am just trying to make the best use of my time. Be truthful. Take one day at each time. Dont worry about my career path 3-5-10 years later. Actually, no one knows what happens even tommorow. and that is truth.

4. Realise another important truth, a person worth is not measure by the job he hold.

5. And when you finally get the job, even if it does not fit your expectation fully, appreciate it. When u get down to it, everyone has some desire to be CEO, earning big bucks, drive big car etc. But i really wonder how many will be happy because i think they just cannot appreciate it the present.

well i graduated from Curtin and i gotten a job the month i come back to Sg .... anyway its also boils down to individual expectation of a job ... if one is choosy one can hardly land a job be it his/her degree is from local or overseas ......

the first job is always a stepping stone for one to learn on the job after graduating .... once one gain enough experience employers will look more at your experiences rather than which uni (local or overseas) you are from .......

my personnal experience ....

That is really good advise,I send over 200 copiesof my resume before I got any reply and the replies were only rejection after over a month ( 1 month 2 weeks) of waiting. It was disheartening.

Have you tried the Big 4? They are hiring auditors by the hundreds.

Yes low pay, yes long hours, yes no progression within the firm.

But once you get your CPA, here comes to good life.

Resume: CPA, 3 years in EY =)
