Career Progression in IT
Hi everyone, i was an underachiever in polytechnic, and only decided to study hard when i started studying my Computer Science degree at SIM-UOW. I am one of the top few students. Apart from that i know IT is pretty stagnant but i would like to know what would be the best career progression for me to take.
What kind of IT companies should i be trying out? NCS? CSIT? DSTA? DSO?
What kind of Certifications or further education should i be pursuing?
Thanks!

Hi there,
When you ask what is the progression in IT - i would be asking...
What do you wan to progress in?
Unlike Business where it break down to Marketing, Accounting and etc
In IT
It is still a very wide scope
What do you want to be?
Programming, Security, IT analyst, Project Management, Database, Web dev, Sys Admin and many more..
Maybe you should be asking - what area do you wish to focus into - before asking that question...

If you wan to go into security
Here is a couple of approach - 1 most companies are not willing to train up new grad - they wan ppl with EXP
the following companies you could try to start of with
CSIT
NCS
eCop
and you do have to work Shift work... which alot of them mind.
happy trying

Hi, previous UOW grad here.
security is not easy to enter into. Like the previous bro said, companies want to hire those with EXP. would advise that u intern at CSIT if they offer it again in your batch. At least easier to enter the security line.
Certs-wise you gotta see what field of IT you wanna go into. like CCNA for networking. blah blah blah. I had a OCPJP when entering into the software programming field but it doesn't make a pay difference. just a high opportunity chance at the job.
lastly, you gotta be positive/happy in the IT line cause we don't earn as much as finance people but its more of a comfort-zone. All the best in your studies! cheers!

Actually in security itself - is also wide
There is VA - aka Hacking team
SOC - Security Operation where IDS skillset is required
Firewall and Proxy - Perimeter Security, ACL and etc
Application Security
Malware Forensic
System Forensic
GSEC is a good start for you to understand IT security Better. But it might be too beginner for some. I had friends who complain that.
Just sharing of info.

I'm also afraid of GSEC being too basic! It's abit too expensive for something basic!
Good to know! will look up on them!

think about whether you want to be on end user or vendor side.
In end user environment, pay and benefits vary according to type of industry and company
Over at the vendor side, it's a complex maze of things.
You have the SI, Service Providers, consulting firms, outsourcing firm, software house, software/hardware principals, distributors etc.
Global SP, consulting firms and principals are usually the better paymasters.
