Planning for "Retrenchment"???

Currently working in banking in a supporting sales role.

Personally the skill set is very generalist and experience is probably the only thing I will possess over 'younger peers'.

However, I am just thinking what will happen say when I reach the age of 40 with an 'expensive cost' to the corporation and I happened to get retrenched and get replaced with a younger person?

How should I prevent myself to be retrenched (is this even possible?)? and if I do, what other alternative jobs can I have at this age?
