yes 3.5 is the going rate for most govt agencies

non-negotiable i'm afraid. especially if you're fresh grad. govt agencies tend to follow a fix template for entry level grads.

i am quite surprised how teachers can earn 100k after bonus before they are 30 (albeit good performers)...

while the pte sector offers higher starting pay in some regards (esp in financial institutions and consulting), not many offer similar lucrative bonuses apart from those in front line sales or investment banking (with the trade off being lack of job security)..

as such, i think those who have settled in well in the civil service and earns a decent pay (80-100k) shld not think of jumping into the pte sector or many will be sorely disappointed.

that's why not many high-performing teachers are jumping ship. they are happy with both the work and the pay, so why should they quit?

lets just put it this way. in every company there are high earners and then there are the rest. we can't keep comparing top earners in one sector vs the average earners in the other sectors. 100k per year is not that easy as it sounds.

really depends on the stat board. i think 70-80% of stat board jobs are the so-called technical role which requires some degree of specialisation. Generalists are less common than in ministries. there are pros and cons for both, you just need to find your calling

btw how many months of bonus do you think civil servants will get this year end?
i'm hoping for 1 (AWS) + 1.5 because of the spectacular recovery

but i think more likely it will be 1 + 0.75 since govt will want to appear to be more conservative... the rest of the goodies will come in march 2011

It depends on when are the elections. As Mah Bow Tan said, everything is about the elections.
