i think he is the one with 2nd upper from NUS?? 2007batch..like mention before he can hit 5k in just 5 yrs exp....

do note that in feb MX11 got +10% adjustment, april most probably he got B grade , +8% merit increment more, assume his salary in dec2011 is about 4.3-4.4k, within 6 month time frame, his salary already increment by ~18%...lol , as expect his current salary is low 5k..with annual package approx 84k+/-3k

No they won't. There isn't a central HR and everything is decentralized. In fact, some agencies are competing with one another for talent.

source from my friend:

6 years exp with STE, just M2, ~4.8k

got 1 guy join as mid career change(previous got 10 years exp from other company) as M1, after abt 3.5yrs exp with STE hit M2, ~5.8k

another guy 15-16yr exp, when hit M2, with ~5.7k

I think M2 pay scale is from 4.5k to 7.5k ??

There is absolutely nothing wrong in turning down any offer. Also, there is no incentive for them to sabotage your applications to other companies. Don't be a paranoid lah. haha

Civil service pay brackets are pretty standard lah, if I go into MX11 early, salary is around there lor. I started at 2800 in 2007. Pretty satisfied with nearly doubling my gross pay ny next year, but compared to my peers outside, so-so only.

I don't think its a good thing to max out your pay grade. It may mean that your CEP is low. Or maybe because there's no opportunity to promote you because there is no vacancy.

Hi all

Just wanted to have a sense of where I stand in terms of civil service and possibly the path ahead.

Current Age : 29
Year joined stat board : Mid 2009
Entry salary: Around $3400 (with 1 year working experience)
Current salary: Around $5.5k (includes 1 promotion)
Degree: 2nd upper honours

Just to check in terms of current market rate and potential, how am I faring?

Thanks.

Unregistered 05-06-2012 08:59 PM

Personally I would say that getting a promotion within 3 years is very good, or you have been lucky to be in the right place at the right time. That's assuming you didn't come in at MX13 and been "promoted" to MX12.

Take a look at the cohort who joined at the same time as you, whether they have been promoted like you have? Every organization's progress is different.

wat degree do you have? engineering or finance/business/banking ?
is your statboard job more related to engineering or finance?
do you have any wage adjustment during your stay in this current stat board?
are you a at least a "B" grader throughout these 3 years with statboard?

wah 3 years with stat board with 1 promotion give you +2k more since you join...that is alot!!!

I would say you have done very well, i suppose you grad in 2008july and a male with NS cohort?

Unregistered 05-06-2012 09:26 PM

Hi

Yup I am from the June 2008 graduating batch. Degree in Engineering. Was also fortunate to have the 10% pay adjustment announced in Feb 2012.

I think compared to my peers especially those in civil service, I am considered lucky. Currently is more like evaluating or on the crossroad, to contemplate whether should I continue on or maybe should try out private sector or even do some small business if possible. I know this is getting out of comfort zone and a risky trade, considering the economic uncertainty now. Well if not, I will just continue to stay in civil service and 'farm' my way.

Hope to hear some of your views. Thanks.

Unregistered 05-06-2012 09:41 PM

what is the promotional increment from MX12 to MX11?

Without a promotion, the MI for MX12 is roughly 204 for C graders and 244 for B graders....

base on the information he provide:

he should be a B grader consecutively(+8.8% each) for 3 years in stat board with 1 promotion(+15%), and the feb +10% wage adjustment.

3400x(1.088^3)x1.15x1.1 = ~5539, close to 5.5k

Does my hypothesis make any sense ?

Not surprised that starting pay has risen a bit since I joined Civil Service in Aug 2007.

Back then, I had already worked for about 2 years in a Stat Board before joining Ministry as a MX13 at $3050/mth. Thought it was ok then as I only had a pass degree from Aussie uni. I took a peek at a fresh grad's offer (with honours) from local Uni and he got $2800. Think fresh honours grads these days are earning around $3000-$3500.

For me, I got my MX12 in 2008 and then MX11 in 2011. By the way, it's pretty common for officers who are less than 30 years old and have gotten their MX11 after 3-5 years of service. Their pay is more or less than mine which is about $5000-$5800. As what some forumers have mentioned, the salary figures are not that wide-ranging.

Please bear in mine that MX officers are generalist. Meaning, you pick up the necessary skills as you work. I've had 3 postings in 4 years and will be posted again in 2-3 months time. Most will not have my kind of journey but there are always exception if you know the system well enough :)

it's 15% when i was promoted to MX11.

they don't tell u the breakdown but can estimate a bit -- Promotion increment (7%) + Merit Increment (8%-B grade) = 15% increase in pay.

Unregistered 06-06-2012 10:31 PM

15% is quite alot. Would u mind disclosing how much u are drawing now?

After feb12 adjustment>>>$4510 to $7909

wow you are hitting the ceiling already!!! Next year die die must promote.

but 6 years to hit 5.6k, hmm actually not bad... you always "C" grader ??? yes/no??

Unregistered 06-06-2012 11:29 PM

Ya, i have hit ceiling...!@$%^&*. Hopefully can get a promotion next year.
Mostly C and C+....only 1 B.
6 years in MOM and 1 year in pte sector prior to that. Grad from FASS...with honours.
Hence i wonder how much a promotion will entail...If really got 15%, it is very good.

Teachers' salary

The teaching profession forms a large chunk of the civil service. However, there has not been much discussion about teacher's salaries. How much will a teacher/Subject head/HOD earn, in general, at the age of 30, 35 & 40? By the way, teachers are traditionally the KING of Whiners. U only need to recall how frequent you hear your friends who are teachers complain about the long working hours, heavy workload, recalcitrant students, unreasonable parents...just to name a few. And they get defensive and annoyed when others comment that they get to enjoy school holidays.

Before you classify teachers as whiners, please go talk to someone who understands the work of a teacher in Spore. Your comments are unfair and do injustice to the teaching fraternity. No I am not a teacher, in case you think I am one of the "whiners". I am work in energy trading related industry, and truth be told, I think being a teacher is tougher despite my P&L reponsibilities and sometimes, longer working hours.

Ask yourself, can u wake up at 5.45am everyday, teach (students if you are lucky, do scold you CCB occassionally) then do alot of stupid non value adding project groups, be in charge of an ECA (or CCA as they call it now), bring kids for excursions, reach home at 6pm, only to start marking scripts/workbooks/prepare lesson plans till 10pm. During the June/Dec hols, these poor sods are supposed to work as well, doing projects, attend workshops for self improvement etc. Beyond that, teachers are also role models for students, so they have to be morally and ethically upright...can you take all these nonsense for the pay they are getting ?

That's why they are competitively remunerated. Most teachers make 100k/yr in their mid-thirties.

kept for reference = mean no chance for interview for the current position you have applied. which simply mean failed application whatsoever to me.

I have been applying job in DSTA which always put me as "kept for reference". But they have been re-posting the same job/position again and again for 4-5x already(they still never call me for any interview), and I have been apply these same position for the same number of times, and instead of classified me as "rejected", they still put me under "kept for reference".

advise required

hi all,
I am a dip holder, 7 yrs working experience and trying to jump job from one stat board to another.
Went thru the two interviews, 1 written test and asked for 20% increment.
HR mgr call me after 2nd interview to inform that panel find me suitable, he also asked me if they can only match my current salary will i take up the offer. Reason why they can offer increment is because i just receive mine in Apr at current stat board and if they offer me higher pay, it is violation of govt instruction manual.
Does anyone has experience or knowledge of my situation?

Unregistered 10-06-2012 01:49 AM

ya...agree whole-heartedly that teachers are best in whining. Everytime kao pei kao bu.
