Good question. Think in the Civil Service employment salary schemes, there is the daily rated, timescale and superscale pay ranges.

The daily rated are for those who are paid daily obviously. Usually low skilled jobs.
Most civil servants would be in the timescale category. The timescale salary range is quite wide, and has many bands / bars in the range. A typical servant would start in a certain band and will get a fixed yearly increment till he/she crosses the next bar through promotion. If he/she cannot get promoted, that he/she will hit the maximum limit within that band after a few years and stay put.

For those with high potential for greater responsibilities, they will be promoted out of the timescale scheme onto the superscale scheme where the increment and bonuses are not so fixed and very dependent of meeting performance targets (KPI). I think the superscale starting salary is around $12K per month.

I could be outdated.

Firstly, thanks for your answer. Secondly, I do not think that insults are necessary as it was simply an innocent question. We are all civilized people here.

From what I read and from my understanding, there would be two increments, one due to performance and one would be the annual increment of about 4%? I am only due to start my job in January and so I am not too clear about the system yet. I was just wondering even if on probation, if I would be eligible for a pro-rated increment for the Annual increment and NOT the performance increment.

Or am I wrong in my understanding and the two increments are essentially lumped together? Clarification would be much appreciated.

Thank You.

not to mention a shitty and bochup (i.e all guys, all nsf) work environment. No amount of money will ever entice me to work for such a stupid and senseless organization. Regulars like to whine about their so called 'office politics' in camp when they haven't seen **** yet. When real life decision making starts to involve thousands, millions of dollars of your client's money and the prospects of your future career lie delicately in your hands, the claws and horns are whipped out for an all out bloodfest.

The so called SAF 'office politics' I ever hear of are fat lazy officers whining about being arrowed for DO duty. pathetic.

You need to be fit to pass IPPT for promotion.
Yes Sir Yes Sir 3 bags full (Rank, everything about them)
Senior Prison Officer need to be a housing unit OC for the first 2 years minimum. Virtually you are a prisoner yourself. After that, you will be posted as a staff officer for minimum 2 years. Throughout, you will need not perform cyclic shift unlike the JOs but have to work on alternate Sats.
Pay is high when you first join. Every year increment is minimum and you will see your pay rise slowly until you get your next promotion.
Promotion is dependent on getting the right things done for your customer (your boss).
For the first 2 years, stay out of trouble. Once marked, it is difficult to flip. (Your next superior have to write a good report to justify your improvement and not many people are willing to do that)
Competitive environment. Everyone wants to be promoted.
Young 55 years old retirement age. Can be reemployed but that is dependent on performance.

Good stable job though.

My 2 cents. :)

Seem that it is still better working in a bank. Prospect of higher salary

No, your annual increment is YOUR performance increment. The other kind of increment is called a wage adjustment, if it exists.
