The retirement sentiment maybe true in the defence side but other sides still have exciting and real world and fun challenges..

The lack of manpower, high turn over rate and crazy cost cutting is applicable across all divisions.

Somehow, even I worked in ST. I'm unaware of any initiative to recruit young blood...

Whenever conversations of fresh grad come up with management's.
It's usually...

Me: we need people with this specific skill sets to work on this project.
Management : so many? Can cut down just 1 or 2?
Me: the deadline very tight and the LD cost is high. Better we have some redundancy if only high 1 or 2 and they leave before the project due date.. It's very hard to retrain.
Management: how about 3? Hire 2 seniors 1 fresh grad as back up.
Me: we need 5 highly functional programmers. Can't afford to have a fresh grad. Learning curve is steep and time line is short..
Management : fresh grad cheaper..

In the end, I quit. From last I heard the management in charge of that prokect was promoted to head another business unit so he abandoned the project. A few others also left. So the new manager hired to clean up this mess actively hiring now. But it seems like they can't find people.

Oh what a surprise...

If you join ST. Be prepared to accept
1) low pay
2) no support or help from seniors
3) change of management every 1 or 2 years when their kpi already fulfilled
4) old technologies
5) lots of red tape
6) nothing to learn.
7) even learn liao only can be used in ST, can't transfer to other...

I suggest you Google those big name player in cyberscruity and join them instead. Then got the experience, skillet then only come to ST to retire.

ST is not pioneer in cybersecurity...

Everyone doing cyber security, senior management set direction want to setup cyber security division.. But existing staff all don't have this skill. Just hire outsource to fill the gap.

That's how ST works. Really a retirement village

At least your management still negotiate. For me, I asked for one fresh grad because I can easily do knowledge transfer. Reject immediately. Tell me no more headcount, no budget but happily assign me to do researching and testing of new methodologies and supporting >5 projects.

End up I also left. As there was no one to take over me, my tasks were split among the rest of the team, giving them back their actual responsibilities. The research part was given to their favourite newly promoted high-flier FCH M1.

After I left I realised how much I was underpaid. My responsibilities were all from M2 and M1 engineers but I was paid as E5. My new position isn't the highest paying out there, but I know I'm definitely paid more fairly than before at ST.

These old timers refused to plan for succession. One day when many of them were to retire, there will definitely be chaos because they have to either parachute army officers in or promote current staff to middle and senior management without much experience. Probably they will solve the issue with another reorganisation. It will also be the time they wake up from their cushy jobs.

You dumb la.
Should just act average and slack then you won't get much work.
You hero want to show skills. Obviously they will give to people with skills.

Keep to survival in ST is don't be below average. Just average can liao.
Don't overwork. Then just be nice to your old seniors can liao. You can't get promoted with intellect and hardwodk.

ST motto is not "Engineering your future"
It's "be average, good enough"

I did not act hero. Those are the things I'm tasked with since day one. Of course I assumed that was my default workload. So how I know those jobs were unwanted by them? Only when I was leaving my RO told me the truth.

I know you are very clever, probably earning big bucks way more than I am, but no need to call people dumb especially when you have no insight into all the backstories.

What is jiak liao bee.

All those head hunted are chosen cause they are supposed to have leadership quality or connection to the other side... With that connection, hopefully can work closely with the other side to smooth cooperation.

But usually they just retire here. Don't really contribute much and the only thing keeping them here is their connection. So they failed to bring in business. But they are given entitled Senior manager high management role. Perm job.

Very hard to justify paying 10 to 15k to those managers but they don't really add any value.
So end up we detest all this managers. Then when their time is up. They just move to another division to wreck havoc. With even higher pay... While the engineers forever stay as cheap labor..

That my friend is the world of ST.
You rarely see people rise up thru promotion.
Its usually just they transfer someone who was already promoted to another function. Then can't really pefrom in that role... Promoted and shift to another unit..

Exist or not, the people managing the company are still the same. Changing the packaging but keep the same stale recipe don't work.

You are right rebranding just change legal company name only.
Same building. Same address. Same people. Only difference is the management might change abit.
Or those selected to replace are also groomed from the same flock.

ST will only truly transform when the pioneer management all retire..
Until then this company is still being controlled by all this stuck in between old generation and new generation

in 2020 - miss out increment (lag by 3%)
in 2021 - expected (get back the lag 3% , and the 3% for 2021),
ie, monthly salary x 1.03 x 1.03

I also wonder if management take 20% pay cut. Then salary freeze.

Does it mean when it's back to normal their salary bump up to 26%?
