Why not my friend? Engineers are the people who build the technology and set up new form business. Just try to the one, but the reality is even HR is paid more than engineers involved in generating companies core revenue. The whole world is full of fun, which started in early 80's.

I have an opportunity to work in aerospace industry as a component controller, something like a procurement/SCM role, being in charge of a specific line of parts.
Anybody knows what is the remuneration and salary increment rate like?

May I know whether it is a good career path?
I work in 3PL logistics now, BD function.

Just sharing some info:

34yo, 8.5years exp, Construction Sector - Pay $8500 as Project Manager

(I still feel like I need to find some way to start my own business as can't see it increasing much... last year it increased by 6% even with promotion)

My staff:
- Engineers (1-3 years exp) (mostly foreigners) - $2-3k
- Engineers (4-6 years exp) - $3-4.5k
- Assistant Managers (5-7 years exp) - $5-6.5k

Anyway, that's just in my (local) firm...

FYI.

(I agree that construction is the worst industry... as basically zero Singaporeans at the entry level. Only Assistant Managers or Project Managers can see maybe about 30% Singaporeans. I guess everyone else jump ship)

Totally agree, I am in construction sector as well, at engineer/entry level there are almost no Singaporean, manager level 30% sgreans but mostly those old/going to retire type. Even our MD is converted to Singaporean from Malaysian.

Really no idea what the problem is, where the hell are all the young engineers?

I think that locals and expats earn similar salaries if they are at the same professional level. Singapore is a small country with only about 3.5 million citizens. Comparing an average Singaporean with the foreign top talent from all over the world is analogous to comparing local Singaporean IT businesses to IBM, HP, Cisco, Microsoft etc operating in Singapore. Just like there are some world class IT companies in Singapore, there are some world class Singaporean engineers earning similar salaries to top grade expats. As you cannot expect all Singaporean businesses perform like the top global companies, you cannot expect all Singaporean engineers to perform like the top global talent in Singapore.

I had moved from Sydney to Singapore in 2002 as an IT engineer with a global company. I earned the same number of dollars in SGD instead of AUD. I was told that it was local package, and it used to be about 113K SGD in 2002 (I used to earn 113K AUD in Sydney). That's the whole package including bonus and retirement schemes, health insurance etc.

Soon, I am moving to Singapore again from Sydney on a similar deal with a global company. This time my total gross package all inclusive is 170K SGD (as I earn 170K AUD here). Apparently that role was opened in Singapore about a year ago, but the company couldn't find the local experience, hence they decided to look elsewhere recently.

When inflation is considered, I can say that my salary has increased only %10 assuming the annual inflation was %3 in the last 12 years.

I have dual B.Sc. in IT, and 25 years work experience in US, UK, AU, SG as an engineer. Please note that I am still working as an hardcore technical engineer (not a manager etc). When I was at uni, I was in the top 0.03 percentile in science students in my country. You can use this statistical data to place yourself in the industry.

BTW overseas engineers from developing countries come to Australia on temporary work permits and give trouble to Australian new graduates as well. However, good quality locals always shine over the foreign "mass production" grade foreign engineers. If not the first year, a good engineer's salary picks up in a couple of years and settles down after about 10 years. After that, it is pretty flat assuming you continue working as an engineer.

Me myself is an engineer. To verify your claims, may I know what is your title? What work are you engaging in?

As an "expert" IT guy, I presume you are expert some of the below
1) Database (SQL, Oracle)
2) Network architecture
3) Wireless (Cellular and SRW)
4) System administration
5) Scripting languages
6) Security (CISSP...etc)
7) Internet programming languages and tools (html/CSS, Java, ASP.net, scala, Perl, PHP..etc)

Let list down one and I will test you and see how good you are. Common, you are a high IQ guy who ace in exam.

How many directors are there? A Singapore senior software engineer make around $58,000 per year, and senior can be something from 2 years to 30 years. Their monthly salary scaled to 13 month is $4500.

A project manager make $80,000 a year. Monthly salary is 6.1k.

As a local and engineering grad, I left my SME main-con after about 2 years. That was more than 2 years ago when I left. I'm in a better place now and not really an engineer anymore.
