But when there's scarcity, there's opportunity. And if you establish yourself as an excellent criminal litigator, "bigshot" clients will look for you and willing to pay a lot.

For family law, it is getting more difficult to eke out a decent income with specialist family law firms undercutting their fees. And generally, I feel the fees earned are not worth the huge amount of time spent. A contentious divorce can be very taxing, especially if the other side is a LIP and uncooperative. Furthermore, family courts are reluctant to grant costs order against any party so there's that.

Criminal lawyers such as Josephus Tan?

My five cents
3 possible reasons

1) salary negotiation failed - possible
2) another student sex scandal - less likely
3) somebody has an ex to grind for some past events - possible

Very unusual. Usually selection of dean is preapproved by provost and president and law faculty, and by nus board.
Something weird is going on.

think it’s more likely that it’s some health or family reason. appointments like these would have all the terms settled beforehand so it’s not like salary negotiations would have been ongoing after an announcement regarding a new dean.

smart and powerful people are not immune to the normal life events

Doing lots of pro bono and CLAS cases doesn''t necessarily make one the best criminal lawyer. Just like you being the most hardworking employee in the company doesn't mean you are the best. Harsh but true.

In my view, only Sant Singh and Sreenivasan are excellent criminal lawyers. Perhaps Peter Low is a distant second.
