I have worked there. That is not the case.

The pay philosophy as we were told is to be in the top quartile. For 5 years experience, 4900 sounds right.

I believe the following are average figures in private sector?

a) 20% increment for job switch (or promotion) every 2 years.
b) 4% increment in same job.

Thus 10 years of experience will earn you about $5.5K/month?
(Taking starting average salary to be S$2.5K/month)

Any thoughts?

Agree>>job switch may give you ~20% increment.

Dun not agree>>In ST Engineering, annual increment on average is ~3-4%, promotion increment on average is ~4-6%.(no such thing as +20% for promotion one), and people get promoted once every 3-4 years.

assume starting pay 3k, after 10 years with ST with 3 promotion, an engineer will get ~4.8k after 10 years with the company!!!

if you are a civil servant for 10 years average peformer, will hit between 6-7k

How much increment to ask if last job was only 5 months long?

They will probably look at the previous job of longer stint period?

Actually it doesnt matter, low level jobs(<3k), ask for 25% or more , middle level(<6k) ask for 15~20, if you are in sales role ask for a whopping 85% onwards.

This is provided that are jumping from a happy ship to an unknown sea, if you already not happy with ur current employment, then just go at maybe no increment?

Remember, changing job is a risk, you may lose more money even if they accepted your rate. Thus its always good to secure the minimum at best!

Note: Never quit without securing another job!!

Before you decide to change job, you should actually test market little by little, try to apply job posts with ridiculous asking pay, with job most likely you dun want to work in, then slowly lowering until you get an interview!

My starting pay as an engineer is $2,400 (SME)
Confirmation got me additional $100.
Still very low as compared to my peers.

Close to 3 working years in the same industry.

One annual increment of 3.75%
One promotion increment of 16%
One job change increment of 23% (MNC)

I think jumping to competitors can ask for more,

I tried once 2 yrs back and they willing to offer me 23% more annual package..

so stay with pte ;) unless your stat boards got competitors?
