To any business, workers are nothing but a necessary cost burden. Now this cost can be reduced drastically and profits can be maximised. Makes me wanna start a business right now!!

tough times ahead.

If only it is so straightforward. In tech companies, we are looking for talents, not just any code monkey. We want people who can make impact, and we pay premium for them so that we can come up with fresh ideas to stay ahead of the curve and roll out reliable services. This is why top tier tech companies pay so high, and continues to do so.

I highly doubt any of these companies can be 'confident' in contracting tech jobs to cheap workers, because in software development what you pay is what you get. You hire local or overseas graduates who can pass the barrage of interviews you throw at them, you can bet your ass they know their worth because they all would know market rate of top tier tech companies. It doesn't matter if you are local or overseas for these.

If you are talking about bottom tier companies where tech is not the main line of business (cost centers) then maybe. But who in comp sci aims to go for these companies anyway? 🙃

Another idiot who knows nothing about the tech landscape. Btw u do know companies like Google, Facebook, Grab, Shopee relies immensely on those markets right?

Do a simple linkedin search and see the racial composition of these devs in the companies. Graduates from C9 university (top tier in China) and NIT, IIT (top tier in India) easily command 6k , 7k basic starting.

These are way higher our top tier uni (NUS, NTU) salaries.

The fact is that the demand for tech is increasing. If you are good you will get your moneys worth.Even Indians and China CS students know this and they are highly sought after globally.

I just graduated with FCH from NUS Computing with a degree in Computer Science and I can't find a job. Google and Facebook seem to be hiring more product management and business development roles rather than SWE.

If you are only applying to Google and Facebook, sorry to say this but this is precisely why you haven’t succeeded in finding a job. My advice is, just apply to more places regardless of prestige and cast your net wider. It is employer’s market now.

Btw this thread is to compare CS (civil service) and Ministry starting pay. Not comp sci. Lol

Hiring com sci is not just based on having a FCH, it's a lot to do with your projects, competitions and internship experience

Hiring comp sci for top companies are mainly based on IQ tests which challenges you to solve problems like inverting a binary tree or finding the max contiguous sum in a 2d rectangle array

If you cant do these, despite whatever nice projects or internships you have = you're out
