Unregistered think about whether you want to be on end user or vendor side.

In end user environment, pay and benefits vary according to type of industry and company
Over at the vendor side, it's a complex maze of things.

You have the SI, Service Providers, consulting firms, outsourcing firm, software house, software/hardware principals, distributors etc.

Global SP, consulting firms and principals are usually the better paymasters.

GSEC is a good start for you to understand IT security Better. But it might be too beginner for some. I had friends who complain that.

Just sharing of info.
Anyone know what are the prospects in VA? if i am offered a position in VA but with low starting pay like 2.5, should i take it up?

dupdupdup I'm also afraid of GSEC being too basic! It's abit too expensive for something basic!

Good to know! will look up on them!

dupdupdup Hi thanks for the reply! So are you in the security field now? I am one of the better students at my batch and yes they do offer internship for my batch! i would also hope to get into CSIT. I plan to go into software engineering and have already completed CEH and ECSA. I was planning on doing GIAC GSEC. Any advise on certifications?

UOW_Grad Hi, previous UOW grad here.

security is not easy to enter into. Like the previous bro said, companies want to hire those with EXP. would advise that u intern at CSIT if they offer it again in your batch. At least easier to enter the security line.

Certs-wise you gotta see what field of IT you wanna go into. like CCNA for networking. blah blah blah. I had a OCPJP when entering into the software programming field but it doesn't make a pay difference. just a high opportunity chance at the job.

lastly, you gotta be positive/happy in the IT line cause we don't earn as much as finance people but its more of a comfort-zone. All the best in your studies! cheers!

If you wan to go into security

Here is a couple of approach - 1 most companies are not willing to train up new grad - they wan ppl with EXP

the following companies you could try to start of with
CSIT
NCS
eCop
and you do have to work Shift work... which alot of them mind.
happy trying

Unregistered Hi there,
When you ask what is the progression in IT - i would be asking...
What do you wan to progress in?
Unlike Business where it break down to Marketing, Accounting and etc

In IT
It is still a very wide scope
What do you want to be?
Programming, Security, IT analyst, Project Management, Database, Web dev, Sys Admin and many more..

Maybe you should be asking - what area do you wish to focus into - before asking that question...
