And that is why Singaporean Software Engineers who earn 6-digits salary in the US find it a very difficult choice to come back. They would have to take a steep pay cut plus a higher cost of living (unless they live in New York City) unless they change line from hardcore product development engineering to institutions like Finance and Banking.

Note that there is a difference between people who call themselves "Software Engineers" after reading an "introduction to programming" book in 2 weeks. In the short-term view, which unfortunately many non-technical employers in Singapore are too accustomed to hold, these amateur programmers may fit your needs. But their delivered code quality would be terrible without proper training and experience and most non-technical managers would not be technically competent enough to evaluate. Most of them would have no concepts of using accepted design patterns, order of complexity of their algorithms and relationships to performance, code maintainability, and testabilty which is important to ensure code quality. This is why Singaporean software has the bad reputation, in the US, of being poorly written and buggy (i.e. thinking of the SIA website being down for a long time and their management finding excuses that any experienced Software Engineer in the US laugh at).

Agreed.

This i fully agreed! They are only lowering the standard of Singapore IT Infrastructure and solution.

nevertheless, you peanut you get peanut

This thread was highlighted at the top right hand corner of the Salary.sg website. It drew my attention and so I thought of giving a small contribution during some free time in the office.

I was motivated more by an urge to say something than an enthusiastic wanting to help the original poster.

On to more worthwhile comments, I do agree with some of the other posts. Programming wise, there is a certain degree of art and design in how the algorithms and user interfaces are implemented. Sure, foreigners may work harder and for longer hours. But this doesn't mean that the applications they code will interface well with the non-technical people who ultimately use them.

During my time studying math in one of the best school in the south part of the States, the consensus in launching a successful mobile application is to focus on the presentation and implementation and not on the idea.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that you need a more liberal arts education, as opposed to a purely technical one like those found in India, to have this understanding on design. I will say that spending three years learning nothing but C++ will not improve your skill in communicating with humans, which to a certain extent is a skill needed to get a job.
