Those who talk big here are the virtual "high flyers". in real life, they probably cannot even afford a meal at macdonalds.

I'm joining poly as lecturer. Age 34. Pass degree. A bit of experience in teaching part time about 1-2 year.

I understand from discussions that poly will not match our salary . What salary should we inform to HR? Also, which pax will I be in

Don't be in denial for too long. Shape up and keep up.

S'pore has 101,000 millionaires (those with investible sums of US$1m, not including their primary homes). There are many more individuals who have S$1m but not quite "qualified" as millionaires. And they are others who would have otherwise qualified if they had not bought expensive homes.

I am not a millionaire as I don't have investable assets worth US$1m, but my home is now worth $2m, fully paid. I can easily be a millionaire if I sell my home and buy a $300k resale HDB flat. I asked my wife about this idea of downgrading to a HDB flat (she is not working) but she flatly says no because she would lose face with her tai tai friends. Most men in Singapore can be millionaires, if not for their wives. Most wives would welcome upgrading but not downgrading. Too shameful, it seems.

why did you pay off your home rather than invest the cash? given that banks charge the lowest interest for home loans, my view is that if you have a job it would make sense to continue paying a mortgage yet have $500K - $1M cash ready to invest in a downturn. for example i bought stocks in 2011 which have gone up by 30% to date even with the recent correction

I bought my terrace house many years ago at $500k, so there is no cash to speak of. Maybe i should monetize my house and buy a cheaper home since I don't need a big house now.

If you have read Robert Kiyosaki's books, you would have sold off the terrace house and bought 2 condos long ago. One condo to stay in (so that the wife won't "lose" too much face to her relatives and friends) and another to make money. Some more you said you don't need the space. Condo got facilities that you and the wife could use to stay healthy.

I do not own nor stay in a landed property, but the many I see in S'pore don't really have big land area. All built up vertically. Hard to clean and a lot of climbing up and down. Not good for older people. Wifi signal in house also not well distributed. Roads along landed properties also clogged up with parked cars and "reserved" bins. Fights between neighbors / visitors have been reported because of this. Dengue problem some more because neighbors don't take care of clogged drains / roof etc.. No end to problems.
