I'm 31, completed my residency and now practising independently in the US. If finances and career trajectory are your main goals, I would advise against pursuing medicine.

I have friends who are SWEs in big tech and I believe there is more opportunities to branch out, especially if you're open to start ups. I feel like they can make larger impact on humanity than I can.

Furthermore, the opportunity cost for me to join a startup is too big, since I will be giving up almost half a million of salary a year. However, I truly enjoy my work caring for patients, derive fulfillment in my work, and feel adequately compensated for my work. Hope this helps.

I do not think there is a cut off age for residency in Singapore. I have seen ppl in their late 30s doing residency. However, I would say most starts about 27-30?
If you follow this forum, you would see that 'most' of the time, the argument is about money vs passion and by passion it means to pursue sub-specialty training. Will you be at a disadvantage coming back at 31 to start medical career? The answer is probably no; provided you are able to shine or integrate fast, because sometimes, getting into residency is as much about knowing the people and system as being an outstanding medical officer.

I don't think i can advise you on medicine vs engineering. It is two vastly different work and pathway. However, if you are someone who enjoys and opens about working with different people and in different countries, maybe engineering is better because i believe it is not that strict to work in other countries with engineering degree than a medical degree due to licensing issues.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Not to be discriminatory
I only take in residents with 3 years experience
And under age of 30
Ie. They should grad abt 26 or 27.

Reason being I need them to do EOD calls
Put in 100% effort
Survive without sleep for 42 hours
Say you heard right
You need to be able operate post call

In fact I have bad experience with those Duke MD
They v lazy and don't work as hard as young mbbs

But I do give chance if they can demonstrate they r fit
