Inhouse is a mixed bag, but in general startups are uncomfortable, money-grubbing businesses (they have to be to succeed). Expect long hours and low pay. If you go, it should be because you're provided equity options. But in that case, you're literally betting on the company's long-term success.

stay away from generalist midsize firms in general. lousy pay, oftentimes as long hours as big4 firms and poorer exist options (due to second rate prestige and deals or case exposure).

either go big / top-end or go small (where WLB is good or flexible and you're commission based)

imo, the only good case for working in a midsize firm, career wise, is if it has a strong specialist offering e.g. shipping/admiralty, IP, insurance, where you can carve out a niche in that sector and go toe-to-toe with the big players.

for generalist comm lit or corporate work, forget it.
