As a o&g major remuneration is confirm way above other industries. Culture wise very slow and bureaucratic like stuck in 1990s and mobility usually only for technical project engineers or senior manager.

Total is a 2nd tier o&g major together with the likes of Chevron, Connoco & the old BP before they got into trouble. Many see Total AP as a stepping stone to Shell or Exxon, but not many actually make the transition in the end.

If you are coming from other industries or small o&g firm, it is a good place to go for better CV & pay. If you are from Shell or Exxon, then better to stay unless the Total job is much bigger.

In cases where people do not actually make the transition by jumping into shell/exxon, what are the other good company in the same industry to jump to? Like you said, 2nd tier o&g company? I am currently in a 2nd tier o&g company, planning my future for brighter path as the outlook of internal promotion may seem bleak. I am currently in operations, human resouce learning & development. Transfer to other country is not easy for me. Been with this company for 3.5 years and on several attempts request to transfer to other country. Failed all times and i have given up hope.

Yearly increment is little in 2nd tier o&g and after approximately 4 years, my salary is still not competitve enough as my other o&g friends.

Is total internal incrmeent high?

Well your problem is many fold IMHO.

1) First off your package might be low by o&g standards, but they are probably very high compared to most other industries. If you are going to take a similar level job, chances are that besides big banks & pharma companies nobody else can match. But these 2 industries are brutal in culture, fast paced and long hours. Think carefully whether it is worth it.

2) If you are already in a tier 2 company, the only way up really is to get in Exxon or Shell. But I'm sure since you work in o&g industry you should know how hard to secure a role there. It's like a Citi or HSBC guy trying to gate crash into JPM or Goldman Sachs, very few will succeed because the no. of applicants way outnumber the no. of vacancies.

3) In terms of increment budget, Exxon & Shell are the famous evergreens, i.e. no matter what environment they pay big bonus & increment. Same thing can't be said for the rest though. With the current low oil price environment, you jump from 1 o&g to another basically the increment budgets are going to be low no matter what. Try and avoid upstream only players as they are all under massive pressure to cut cost to tide over this oil crisis.

4) Take the plunge into a bigger role but smaller company. Sometimes it works and you can develop a seperate career track, but this is risky as moving down to smaller companies is easier than going back o&g major. If it doesn't work out you could get stuck in these small mncs or local glcs forever.

Please go for it man ... This industry is better than others ...

And the fact they are hiring means it's doing pretty well in this current low crude price environment ...

It's a good choice also to enter total rather than those mainly upstream oil majors which are likely having tight headcount ...

sorry to hijack the thread, i am also from o&g industry & heard rumours that Shell just declared much higher bonus this year compare to past few years. quite surprise since oil price so low and whole industry cutting cost. anyone can confirm?

I thought shell chevron they pay fixed 3 months?

That's surprising to hear companies with upstream still doing so well...

More like 60% more.

Unregistered 18-02-2015 11:10 PM

xian.... while the rest of the o&g industry is cutting cost and terminating headcount, this shell & maybe exxon still can increase bonus and give big increments...

few years ago should have taken up the offer from shell instead of my current job, last time young greedy only look at who offer bigger mthly salary :(

Are you sure this is true? It's really difficult to imagine how Shell will be able to give out that bonus, considering the prices of oil and the fact that it is scaling down considerably on its Capex and labour costs.

Fresh from the news: ://.reuters.com/article/2015/02/20/us-refineries-labor-strike-talks-idUSKBN0LO00520150220

Shell is facing trouble with labour unions elsewhere. How could it possibly double the variable bonus for employees at its other operating countries?

It is not double, but still substantially more than the previous year (60%). The bonus applies for everyone working there globally. You can't just base your judgement on some labour union news, the bonus is determined based on a number of different factors including cash flow, projects deliveries, production, contributions from both upstream and downstream etc.

But let's not go out of topic here, this thread is about Total Oil, not shell.

I think you got confused. It is 60% above target rate, but double that of last year cauz last year was below target rate.

Very slow and red tape, like civil service. Salary increment 6-7% with 5-6 months bonus, not the best among O&G but good still.

Unregistered 30-09-2015 12:20 AM

heard from one friend who used to work there the bonus is not as good as other O&G companies, but still good which is between 2 to 3 months for performance.

your interview was for the entry-level logistics role? i wanted to apply but it was closed before i had my cover letter prepared :/

hwei 30-09-2015 10:18 AM

i went for HRIS Coordinator post. Everything went well but still no news from thm yet. sigh...kinda very slow

Total is one of the best co. to work for in O&G. Other than Shell or Exxon, they are the most stable in terms of job security and good pay & bonus. Some of the smaller co. may offer better when times are good, but once the cycle is down they hantam pay cuts, forced leave, retrenchment etc etc
