Retrenchment In Singapore
Hi all
Not sure if I had come across this before, but just like to check with you guys, have you been thru retrenchment before in SG? If yes, could you share your experiences, if no, what are your views on it? Personally I had heard and experience myself the fear of being retrench and the unintended consequences following it. I had seen families broken due to quarrels over financial issues, depression due to ego of being retrenched, unwillingness to accept the fact they are retrenched etc... I understand that a lot of times its not solely the individual's fault that he/she got retrenched but mostly due to the realities of the economic cycle... Furthermore it seems that a lot of sg ppl tend to forget the realities of retrenchment coz to them it seems such a distance past and most of them have the mentality it wont happen to me since i am an ace performer, i am in the management team etc ( correct me if I am wrong) So I think now is actually a good opportunity to discuss these issues coz sharing is caring :) |

From where I am (electronics), we still need people. Singaporeans often shun from us. TS, no retrenchment lah, unless you really f up then nothing to say. |
Finance and IT sector often retrench people, I've also heard of retrenchments in private education and manufacturing industry. In many cases, people are asked to tender and save face, but also so that companies can avoid paying retrenchment benefits.
The question is, how to determine if it is a retrenchment or the boss just wants to fire you and hire someone younger and cheaper, but tries to use retrenchment as a reason instead? |

It may seem so, but in a few cases I've seen colleagues threatened with retrenchment, asked to tender first, and then replaced with new colleagues.
I've wondered why the management just didn't fire them instead, but gave them the long story about retrenchment. But on hindsight, it could be a way to save both the company and employee face, as if the company fires, then other employees may feel even more unhappy about this, compared to retrenchment where the company is seen as being subject to market forces, hence no choice but to let some people go. |
You get retrenched, you move on to look for another job. What is there to keep talking & talking about?

1) Your attitude sucks 2) Your pay sucks I can only think of these two reasons for now. Nothing to do with retrenchment. Anyway i wish the staff the best of luck to him/her at least he can find a better place somewhere. |
