Majority of Singaporean employees report work disengagement

But here's some good news.

Singapore - Despite being one of the Asia's most prominent business hubs, the level of engagement in Singaporean workers is worryingly low.

Gallup's latest State of the Global Workplace report found only 9% of workers in Singapore were engaged - locally, up to three quarters were "not engaged" while 15% were "actively disengaged".

Surprisingly though, despite the low levels of engagement, 71% of Singaporeans answered "yes" when asked if their current job was the ideal job for them.

Only 12% of the Southeast Asian workforce was engaged, with the Philippines (29%) being the most engaged country in the region.

The report suggested boosting the low engagement levels in the region through "targeted workplace interventions and employee-focused management training".

It is also important to enforce "ownership" by helping employees feel a connection with their work and the organisation's "larger purpose", and "see how their developmental path fits into the organisation's future".

Globally, the study found only 13% of employees were engaged in their jobs between 2011 and 2012, with 87% of workers found to be either "not engaged" or "actively disengaged". Those found to be disengaged were more likely to be "emotionally disconnected form their workplaces and less likely to be productive".

United States and Canada had the highest proportion of engaged workers (29%), followed by Australia and New Zealand (24%) and Latin America (21%). The least engaged workers in the world was found in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa (all 10%) and East Asia (6%) regions.
