this is quite true. engineering industry is a labor intensive and project based business, at least for most of them eg. marine, construction, manufacturing, software, semicond. they can't afford to pay you high salary and good increment in case of bad business. A good incentive of fat bonus(8-10 months) is hoped to reward you sufficiently and retain you in the coy. foreign technicians and engineers are preferred due to their demand of lower salary, obedience thus loyalty, no rights to argue and fight, ability to withstand hardship and bad environment and benefit. what more hardskills are more important in this field and it can be learnt easily by almost anyone on the job. in other words, you are easily replaceable. after all, their mindset of working here is to earn quick and fast money so that they can go home with wealth and glory, start a family and live a peaceful life instead of hectic life and high living cost here.

Do what you really have the passion for and suits your characters well. if you are unclear, which i can see that is how you are, go for the money . you have good academic background. you should have higher bargaining power than the rest of your peers.

Good luck!

Can't blame you for your naivety. After all, you are a fresh university grad.

Go check out what they say about engineering jobs in this forum.

You will learn a lot from those "been there, done that".

Engineering is a league dominated by foreigners. If you think your expected first-class honours can allow you to shine or get a job with good prospects, you really need to rethink.

Those who have been in engineering line, be it in Oil/Gas, Semicon, engineering services, etc. will know that engineering bosses are OBSESSED with COST. QUALITY of work is secondary. They don't might getting a foreign engineer who produces works sub-par standards. So long as they are cheap to hire.

As a would-be first-class honours grad, can you accept a pay deemed sub-par? If not, the boss would have no hesitations to get some foreign engineers 'cos they are a dime a dozen!!!
