Kelvin,

My points are not very different from the other posters here but I wanted you to ask yourself these qns:

1) Why do you think this boss wants to hire you this way?
(my thoughts are this boss is very scheming and smart. He definitely is so that he can be a boss of a company. SME bosses all can 'tan jiak' very well. But most of them do it at the expense of employees. You start off very low cost and if he isn't happy with you, he can always fire you or start his magic scheme with someone new again. Thing is there will always be fools outside there)

2) What is your opportunity cost for joining this company?
(you mentioned that after 3 years, your average salary would be $3,205/mth. Do you know that now as a grad, the avg starting salary is 2.5-3k thereabouts? You are someone who seems hungry and excited to explore new things. If you show the same attitude with good results in other roles. You can be hitting more than 10% increments year on year for new grads. So your opportunity cost is really quite high)

3) Do you think this boss really wants to groom you as a GM?
(Sounds great but why did he say this to you? To make you feel like a GM material? I'm not saying you aren't but i bet he would say this to anyone he wants to sell this scheme to. He is selling you the dream. This guy is a management consultant. Management consultants are so good they can steal your watch and tell you the time or sell ice to an eskimo)

4) His points about being your direct mentor aren't really powerful plus points
(they are expected points that a boss should mentor and teach his staff. Unless you tell me he is Hermawan Katajaya of Mark Plus & Co or Philip Kotler, then you can even consider this a real important plus point. Besides, Hermawan Katajaya or Philip Kotler and the likes would never come up with such cheap 'SME' schemes to want to hire grads)

5) Training factor is over-rated.
(unless you are in the IT line where you need to genuinely go for new courses to learn new programming languages or risk becoming obsolete, this is not a valid points. Besides do you know your boss will only fork out a small portion of the fee after he claims the necessary subsidies and rebates from WDA/SPRING etc? )

6) Annual leave and medical leave being abused?
(This is the first time i'm hearing this. Annual leave can never be abused. It's your entitlement as part of your salary package. In fact every basic employee should have 7days minimum. I'm surprised how he can contravene this law unless it's no longer a law. Medical leave can be abused and it will always be abused by lethargic employees who just work to get paid to get by. If you are hungry and want to learn and grow, you'll never abuse this. Your boss should know this also)

Conclusion:
YOU DESERVE BETTER.

EVEN KOI BUBBLE TEA PAYS ITS MANAGEMENT TRAINEES 2K-3K STARTING WITH PROFIT SHARING, FULL ENTITLEMENT BENEFITS AND AWS AND BONUS ETC.

Profile
  • Fresh Commerce Grad (Specializing in Management) - No honours
  • Mainly HR & IT Training Experience, Minimal Sales from internships/part time jobss

3 Year-Salary Package Details

Mar 14: $1,000
Apr to Jun 14: $1,500
Jul to Sep 14: $2,000
Oct to Dec 14: $2,500

Jan to Jun 15: $3,000
Jul to Dec 15: $3,500

Jan to Jun 16: $4,000
Jul to Dec 16: $4,500

Effectively, $109,000 over a period of 34 months (Mar 14 - Dec 16), averaging out to be $3,205/mth over 3 years.
  • There'll be CPF
  • I'll be the first hire to be in this "New" pay structure.
  • Boss says this 3-year plan will reflect accordingly in contract.
  • Possibility of increasing/decreasing (but dependent on performance - which the Boss say must see first but if I'm good he's definitely willing to pay more)

Benefits
  • No Annual Leaves (but can take unlimited amount of Unpaid Leaves, up to individual - rationale is people tend to abuse AL/SL)
  • Other than the above, nothing else was mentioned or that I know of.
  • Boss asks me to factor in the Training part where employees are sent to multiple trainings (which costs money and up to $5,000/pax a year - ask me to compare with pees which might not have such trainings; includes stuffs like branding/sales & marketing/social media/personnel development)
  • Boss also asks me to factor in the part where he will be a Direct Mentor to me (which he explains costs money technically cause he invests his time, citing lawyers have consultation fees etc)

Career Progression
  • After this 3 years programme, should be looking at either Senior Consultant/AM role. (but can be faster depending on how fast I learn/perform)
  • Year 4-6, manager role and how to manage business etc.
  • Year 6 onwards, possibility for GM role.

Appreciate any comments please. Thank you.
