contacting hr is fine because they are obliged to only give accurate documented info. but I feel contacting supervisor is unfair for employees because the assessment could be biased (because of not-so-good relationships) or it could alert your supervisor of your current job-hunt which will jeopardise your otherwise-good relationship with him/her...
