I heard after joining the specialist track, there’s not v much lateral flexibility (if one wants to go back to teaching track). Is this true?

No straight answer. But probably some truth in that it is easier to leave the leadership track than to leave the teaching/specialist tracks.
Leaders/managers = generalists
TLs/Specialists = subject matter experts
To jump from a generalist role and develop deep expertise in a specialised area tends to be a bit easier than vice versa. Not impossible though.
