Plot twist: this is a 6 year old post and a wild Arnold appeared and revived this thread outta nowhere.

Jokes aside, I’ve always felt that a suit without a tie is the best balance. It’s casual yet not too casual that it looks sloppy and not too formal to the point that you look like you’re trying too hard. Seriously, in this weather I don’t wear ties even during normal business meetings.

I wore, I got hired. But I also saw some candidates wear suit and tie, but never get hired. And some never wear and get hired. So ultimately, it's not what lands you the job.

ArnoldWilder Yeah, I also agree that it depends for which occasions, sometimes it can be an inappropriate item for such events as parties or other casual events but in general if you wear it is not a problem, it looks anyway suitable in majority of cases. If you are interested in finding good suits, tuxedos and other related things then you can check Gentleman's Guru. I have bought from them a new suit and I was very well surprised about the quality and prices.

Follow the cardinal rule of attire; it is always better to dress up than to dress down.

If office is casual but you dress with suit & tie;
- You can take off the jacket
- You can take off the tie
- You can roll up your sleeves

If office is formal but you dress in t-shirt and jeans;
- You are fcuked.
