Qden I think the Stat figures above is not representative of the real situation in Singapore. My gut feeling is the reality median is at least 25% higher than what is shown.
I started at S$2.0K per month as a junior engineer 20 years ago compare to around S$4.0K for my starting engineer. I am now in mid 40 earning S$200K+ p.a( excl. perks) in the Energy sector with a MNC. I changed job only once and my perspective is that a person needs to be in an environment where top management are paid high, he has to proof his worth at a junior level, work hard and built up relationship quick. Soon it will just take off. Look around you and find out what your supervisor or manager is getting and this will be what you could end up in years to come (assuming the person got the substance). Unless one is seeking contentment beside monetary benefits, one may have to keep changing job till he finds the right balance.

Qden Hi

I am in my mid forties and have been living as a Singaporean Expat all over the world the last 12 years. I am with a MNC in the Oil/Energy sector. My salary package is in region of S$200,000+ excluding the add-on for housing/children education etc. Recently, my company wants me to return back to Singapore to take over the management of our sudsidiary which I am hesistant to do so. It will be a career progression however I will not be enjoying all the perks that I had been enjoying all these years, and on top of that will have to put my children in international school on my own expenses. I am at the cross-road of whether I should jump ship to other company so that I could continue to work overseas or simply accept the fact that it is time to be home-based and start to live humbly like a local. Any wise suggestion/recommendation to put me in better perspective, will surely welcome.

puzzled displeased: Good luck!!

The selection process between front office and middle/back office banking jobs are totally different.

no point changing careers to move into non front office roles, if you’re doing it for $$. the payout there is pretty much inline with the other industry.

front office roles pays better so as to compensate for the loss of family time, stress, risk, instability

middleclass financial slave: that is about the most horrible story i’ve ever heard, period. if it’s true how does people like this MD live with themselves everyday? do they treat their family and friends the same - as convenient parts?
it must be a horrible horrible existence, no matter what money they are getting.
i really hope you can get out of there as soon as possible.
leave before the place sucks your soul dry.

finance not all people in finance suffer the way it’s described above. and they make quite a lot of money too. junior managers and senior business analysts in middle office and back office of big foreign banks mostly make 100k upwards. they don’t suffer health problems, get to enjoy work life balance, run marathons etc.

puzzled displeased: kevin is right, changing career is not as easy as it seems. I would say finance ppl who made it paid it with their blood and sweat.

most often then not, we only see their results but not the process of how they did it
